Depends on your financial situation. But at the end of the day the vacation time is probably priceless. Would definitely go with that over the money. The fact your firm is providing you that option speaks a lot about the firm too, because a lot of firms wouldn’t even consider such a vacation

Why do you want to move? You’re working a ton, but it sounds like you’re talking about going to another biglaw firm anyway. I’d just take an extended vacation to recuperate and think about how you can set better boundaries in the future. If there’s specific things bad about your firm that you need to get away from, that’s one thing. If you just want a big signing bonus and more of the same, that doesn’t seem worth giving up all the cache/relationships you have earned at current firm.

Take your time and enjoy it when it presents itself to you.

Honestly if you’re billing 2800 hours you should be some place with bonuses. Unless you really love the people. Take time off before going to your new firm.

Jeez, how in the world are you billing that much? Do you sleep? When does your fiscal year end?

That's a question that isn't ideal to survey because different factors should inform your decision. It really comes down to individual goals and your financial position. As a general rule though, time is far more valuable than money. You can always make more money, but once spent, you won't get the time back. Cliche, I know, but worth stating. You could also work out time off between jobs and get the additional compensation. In your situation, more than the calculus between time and money, consider firm culture. It sounds like you have a great culture at your firm (or a great relationship with key decision makers) where they are recognizing you have worked a lot and want to do what they can to allow you to take time and avoid burnout. I don't think you can put a dollar value on being in a workplace where people actually care about your well-being. That alone, in my opinion, is worth giving up thousands in compensation elsewhere.

Don't take the money, paid vacation (assuming it's a real vacation and people don't bother you) will do way more for your sanity than cash you stick in your account but don't really get to use. I mean maybe if you lateral you take time off anyway so it's like a paid vacation equivalent, but I wouldn't leave just for the sake of leaving (bc I hate the idea of having to meet people and get to know work styles/personalities all over again)

Thanks all! This is useful to hear. I personally have been telling myself for a while that if they actually do respect my vacation and I’m able to relax, that that might be the better result (and it will be telling if they do not). I guess we’ll see if they actually do respect it, but they are promising they will lol. I really do like my firm, so I’m hoping it works out. I’m a fifth year and intend to stay in big law for a while, so I’m just trying to make sure I don’t burn out from too much work. My billing year ends on oct 31st. I’m also based in NY, so I know that if I get an extra bonus, almost half will go to taxes…

Anybody else over working in the rat race altogether? I’ve jumped around a few times in the last 5 years, improving my comp and aligning more to my strengths and interests, yet I’m still unfulfilled. I’m pretty much doing exactly what the last 20 years of being in consulting has prepared me for: advising clients at the highest levels - and I’m bored. I’d love to leave and take up a more creative job, but of course, that doesn’t pay the bills - anybody think of, or actually made that transition?

Considering leaving for another firm job, one year in. Thoughts? New position would be a better practice area fit and would only work with clients in the industry I want. Currently it’s about 60% of what I’d like. Also, current firm seems to be stagnating with low hours to go around. I’m worried about not making hours, missing my bonus, and low professional development. Comparable on prestige & exit options and would be $5k less. Just worried about burning bridges and leaving “too soon.”
