Would you take a role at an agency with a good rep and interesting work for $140K? Or a role at Havas (😖) for $170K+? I’m leaning towards the former, but that Havas $$$ would be a life changer.

A wise person once told me: "peace of mind is priceless." I'd go with the good rep, and negotiate to sweeten the deal.

Havas. And then make it a good experience. Ignore all the negative publicity. Congrats.

30k difference is not much post-tax. You need to look at benefits, vacation package, and responsibilities of role to gauge. Source: once had 3 offers and 3 agencies entered into bidding war for me

$30K after taxes would be a LIFE CHANGER?! Are you sure? 'Cause people live in a lot of poverty out there so we need to tone down the stories we tell ourselves and the drama we create for ourselves. Perspective and gratitude folks. Sit down and write the top 3-5 things that are must have objectives for your life/career and evaluate the opportunities and money against those then dedice. Don't be a slave to your own spin.

$30K is not a life changer when your other option is $140K. It is if your other option is $60K. Go where you can grow and learn and make up that gap soon.

Havas, like all of them, has had a tough time recently. But ignore the JP stuff . I said it before I’ll say it again. He was a bell end. He wasn’t us. What I will say. And people who know me, know I don’t BS. There is something very cool and smart happening at HAvas. Led from NYC. So get on board. And if they are offering you more than others, that sounds like a double win. Follow your instincts. It’s gonna be great at Havas. And I know I’d love to work with you and anyone else that’s curious. As my dear friend Emily used to say........put a banging donk on it 👊

Just started working at Havas. Shunned it my entire career because of what I heard through the grapevine. The different villages operate independently, but I love it so far. Really buttoned up processes, overly adequate orientation, pay is good and the people I work with are awesome. Really different on the inside then what I was expecting. I say take the life changing money, and get you’re own take on things. But that’s just me. Every agency that had a good rep recently have been hurting. It’s all cyclical who’s got a good rep and who doesn’t, all depends on the people in the company, and that reshuffles every several years.

Stay away from Havas NY. No leadership or vision. The money will come down the line but the 30k will not make up for the frustration.

Check the new tax laws and make sure that 30k isn't just putting you in a new tax bracket that will make it seem like much less. Happened to me last year. It was/is brutal.

Depends what you’ll do with the extra 30k. Lifestyle inflation? Or sock it away and buy freedom faster? If the latter take the money

$$$ towards a future biz (after my ad days are through), and financial help for relatives that aren’t as well off. But making smart, creative, and interesting work matters a lot to me.

Be sure both offers are solid. Then ask tell the first company you want to take the job but then you got this other offer. If they say that is firm do what you have to do then you know you can't get more. But they could say let me see what I can do. Maybe you get a little more. Maybe you negotiate a review at 6 month. Maybe a guaranteed bonus if you meet certain goals. And sometime an extra weeks vacation. Don't be an asshole when you negotiate. Tell them how much you want to work for them and they won't feel you are gouging them. Know your bottom line. Just walk a tight line of respect and be very careful that you don't lose an offer.

30K, after taxes, won’t make a dent on your paycheck. Take the better job. You’ll get there.

Once you get up to 140K, the extra 30K probably won’t make that much of a difference in your life (especially after taxes). Think of the lower paying job as an investment: You’ll probably have the opportunity to do better work, which will help you get better future jobs. (And you’ll probably be happier.)

Go where you think you’ll look better on the other side - what you’ve learned, who you’ve worked under, what accounts you had, what work you were part of

I think working at havas will in the long term make you less valueable and less likely to get better gigs in the future. See the 30k as an investment in yourself and think longer term.

$30k isn’t a life changer, but you should probably take the money. At the other agency you THINK they’re good and you won’t have issues. At Havas you KNOW you’re getting $30k more. You could end up in a good or bad situation at either, go with the sure benefit of $30k more. If you posted what the other company is I’m sure there’d be people saying bad things about that one as well. From what I see, everywhere seems to be a mess.

Definitely role you’ll be happier in - but certainly does no harm to try to leverage a little more in the negotiation even if it’s not base salary (higher bonus potential, working one day/week remotely, etc). Focus on building your portfolio and kicking butt there. You’ll either work your way up or have a great portfolio and make a jump in your next gig
