Would you take a significant paycut (30% or so) to join a tech firm in NYC vs staying in consulting?

My head says the financial hit would be too much but I am not planning on staying in consulting beyond another year or two.

I wouldn't. Better exit opps are out there. Plus you'll need that $$ in NY

NYC bc it's NYC

Depends. I am at $190k base and turn down industry conversations that don’t exceed my current base. Unless you are crazy ahead on comp curve, I will not advice taking a cut

Same D1. Value money more. I’m in my late 40s and had a slow career start in the industry. It helped me build a solid foundation to develop and understanding of corporate organizations however, put me behind on comp and retirement nest egg. Lots happened on the personal front as well early on hence in short I’m in the make up ground mode and paying for kids college and save for retirement in parallel.

depends on what your pay is atm

If you don’t currently live in NYC, and are not in a HCOL area, would not advise taking a 30% paycut - That’s going to hurt you a ton.

Any thoughts around how to use M&A tax skills for the better good? I’m a CPA and originally got into this for a stable / interesting job, but in the long-term I’d like to do something that either influences drafting of tax legislation or helps the public (however naive that may sound). Perhaps I’ve gotten too introspective during the pandemic. Don’t really want to go back for a JD and aside from keeping a roof over my head I’m not very motivated by money. Anyone else have similar ideas?

Considering pivoting into a local MM IB. As my title suggests, my technical skills aren’t as honed as one who has focused on the analysis route. How much of being an Analyst at a smaller IB is technical skill heavy coming into the role? I hold my 7, 66, 24, and am not worried about getting the 79. Any input for how realistic this is? When looking at one particular firm’s career page it doesn’t mention technical skills or modeling once, which led me to believe it may be less important than soft.

Trying to figure out if I should start as an inbound SDR, or try jumping straight into an AE role in SaaS.

I left mortgages at the beginning of the year to start a franchise business, it's now semi-self-sufficient so wanted to start a career again and I live in the Silicon Slopes area. Everyone I know is in SaaS or software engineering.

Just wondering if I should push my resume as far as possible and try to snag an AE role or take my time in a new industry and start from the bottom.

Are Tier 2 firms worth it, given the ratio of brand prestige to WLB? For instance, if you have an offer from MBB but think you might not enjoy the long hours, sucking it up could pay big after 1.5-2y (due to the brand prestige). However, can we say the same for tier 2? Is it worth it to scarify WLB?

M/SM and above, why do you label a meeting as “touch point” or ask if you can have a “quick chat” when it’s something serious? But at my new job, my boss asked for a “quick chat” to literally ask me to change the title of a meeting and then chat about christmas. Now that I’m in management, I want to understand it better.
