Would you: 1. Take an IC role with a tech giant for $200k base and $400k OTE, with earning potential not capped (top 10% performers earning $600k+) OR 2. Stick it out in consulting for possibility of making partner in 3-4 years. Currently at $200k base.

The point of being in consulting is to get an amazing exit. You got one!!!

likehelpful

Ha, can’t argue with this. Did you exit consulting to go to Google?

like

Is this an solution sales role or an account exec role? What do you do in consulting? I’m in amazing high paying tech form but contemplating a sales career and just wanted your perspective how you broke in? To answer your question though i would switch. The upside and growth here is so much better, not even counting equity growth

like

It’s an account executive role. I currently do EPM and ERP implementations. Honesty, I wasn’t even considering sales until someone reached out to me. These tech firms are realizing former consultants are often out performing seasoned sales reps because of their consultative mindset, diverse knowledge of technology, and because they’ve actually delivered tech solutions to clients, not just sold. Depending on your background and experiences as a consultant, it might not be too hard to break into. DM me if you’d like to chat more about it.

I would do 1 because I hate selling and would love to just sit around and do IC work

like

This role would still have sales, but I’m ok with that.

You won't make partner in 3 years.

likefunny

So you're leaving for lateral base comp?

This seems like a case of you looking for answers to stay… I can’t think of any

like

Yes, I do think most would take the offer so I am curious if there’s anyone who would stay and what’s their thought process. At this point, I’m not certain that the potential of making partner in a few years is worth passing up this outside opportunity.

Consulting is dying, gtfo. Also, you can always boomerang back as a backup if you hate tech after 1-2 years..

like

I don’t get your point. IB lost its glamour due to the shrinking job market and lower compensation both due to increased use of algorithms. Consulting is in high demand and the main issue is the lack of adequate talent. I see how that might affect partners who cant staff all the projects they could sell (or have to explain subpar work to clients). But for younger people it is still a great career building opportunity?

Want to give me a referral to the new job?

Absolutely, I got you.

Option 1 hands down

1st one. Partner is not a guarantee.

Would you mind referring me? 200k base looks high to me.😄

If you got hired at the absolute bottom of the payband, I gave my salary expectations which was unknowingly less than my offer a few months back, is it possible to renegotiate a raise to at least the middle of the payband, come the performance review, raises, and bonus meeting, especially given inflation? In addition my firm’s new base payband for my position as an external higher is posted at 31% higher than my current salary.

Feeling conflicted about wanting to leave my current company of a year where I feel I’m underpaid (despite praise from managers), though I love my coworkers and (sometimes) the work/clients. I know I can make a lateral jump somewhere else to make more, and I don’t want to get left behind in this hot market. I would be really sad to leave my current role, but really want/need more money. Transitioned into consulting post-MBA (1.5 years ago) and generally enjoyed the experience. Since I joined my comp has gone up ~13% and I’ve liked my project teams but in my most recent review talk my partner told me he thought I was ready to be promoted and had advocated for me but there was an HR rule against it and I was on-track to be promoted in 6 months. Since then I’ve learned that one of my classmates (started 2-3 months before me due to COVID) was promoted last cycle.
