Wow just found out how much software engineers make at Google and I feel like I am not putting my cs degree to good use. Anyone else feel like they made the wrong career decision out of undergrad?

I’m not sure I agree with the not-doing-very-much comment. There’s a lot of fake urgency in consulting. The fact is that writing software takes a long time and it’s hard to rush it.

I do think the talent v comp curve has become distressingly non-linear. The range in pay within the big tech companies is huge and to be honest really great developers at old tech (oracle, msft) were always paid pretty well.

Baby bro works there fresh out of college. He loves it but he is no means a genius. Just a normal smart cool guy who would have made a great consultant but has learned CS and started out as a full stack developer for Google Cloud platform. Right time, right place. When I graduated during the great recession, my same CS degree was useless.

That sounds amazing. Much better than working 60 hours a week building products that are really boring with people I don't respect

Probably not good enough to use my cs degree at Google ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You’ll be working with a bunch of overgrown man children who think what they’re working on is the most important thing in the world except they work 35 hours a week and half of that time is spent playing video games and napping

like

I don’t know where you get that 35hr/wk thing. More like 70hr/wk with deadline every other week. They provide sleeping pods and other amenities to make you feel at home for those reasons.

The trade off is you’d have to work for Google.

I earned a masters in statistics at SJSU (in Silicon Valley). I constantly think that I got screwed over. I make less than everyone I know, working longer hours with more responsibilities....

like

SDS1 Especially in the Silicon Valley there’s this weird income disparity between old tech and new tech. Old tech is lesser pay but more work, new tech is crazy high pay and not doing very much. It’s fucking weird

like

D1 Agree on the fake urgency in consulting, which is why a lot of the time we deliver trash code and the operations dudes are stuck with nightmares.

I may have to disagree about compensation between old and new tech, since I know plenty of dudes at old tech companies (MSFT under Satya I consider new tech) who make what unproven new grads are making right out the door, when you take into consideration the whole package

like

What pay range are you seeing? I always have google and amazon recruiters trying to reach out to me but I really don’t want to have to brush up my undergrad algorithm and data structures book

like

Maybe but truthfully... ok with not working on yet another ad product

What did you learn?

I could never pass a Google interview but probably am a better developer than a lot of the kids who can that they hire 🤷‍♂️

A1 - do I detect hater in your voice?

How much do they make?

P1 how is that a trade off? Hate the practice I'm in but would love to work for Google

Maybe at senior levels, junior engineers don’t do squat

This is starting to resemble a hacker news thread about white board interviews :)

In seriousness, I think developer comp at, say google/Amazon, ranges from high 100s for a grad to ~1M for a mid-career guru. A lot of that is stock. Happy to be corrected on those figures.

Im currently going to school full time and would like some input on what I should do.

California attorneys — I am having difficulty finding authority concerning the use of a rejected (partial) settlement offer to claim that a party failed to mitigate their damages. I.E. plaintiff could have mitigated if they accepted the (partial) settlement offer. Defendant offered to settle one claim (without affecting the others). Plaintiff rejected. The value of damages has increased over time and now defendant claims that plaintiff failed to mitigate because they did not accept the offer. TY
