Wow. McKinsey, which has the biggest public sector presence of the MBB, really hasn't been doing too hot at all in the sector.

The prestige chasers in consulting are sickening. We are all smart and do meaningful work. Full stop.

Wow McKinsey consultants' replies here are comedy gold. So easy to drag because they're so delusional, even if we ignore the original point of this post.
McK: We're the same as Big4 except we don't let you in without a trust fund, our ego is bigger, and we charge you more!
I shouldn't be surprised any longer that these out of touch elitists are shaping policy decisions for the country. Then again, I guess they said all New Yorkers are SLUTs so they provide us some entertainment.
Lol not true

😂😂 I only complain when I don’t get what I want
Not many COs can justify their rates. Government rate scales don’t really work with MBB.

That is true, which is probably a big reason why the practice is tiny.
And it may be getting smaller or stagnating with all this bad press.
MBB: Where you pay for an ego and bill rate bigger than Big4
Do you just need somebody to talk to about this? Or are you looking for insights into why this is happening?

I'm still reading the article.
Not really focused on the covid response, but I'm just surprised how they could lose so much of their apparently small practice over one report.
Their public sector work is just way smaller than I thought it was.
Just surprised is all.
McKinsey easily has the largest federal management consulting practice.
Now, all the staff augmentation firms may do more in revenue, but they’re winning butts in seats contracts.

SC1 is right here.
Also, this post was about consulting in general. And if we want to talk about cool stuff, Deloitte, IBM, Booz, and ACN all have massive data science practices serving the government. All doing extremely intellectually stimulating work that's high impact and oftentimes reaching the C level or entire organizations. And if not C level, it's often mission-focused, which has a super cool impact on America as a whole.
Even if McK were the only player in strategy, they're relatively weak in data science. And the reality is that these days, there are many consulting fields that are sexy because they're both intellectually challenging and because they have a massive impact, data science being one of them. This strategy-is-the-only-thing-worth-doing mentality that pervades FB (and MBB) is stupid especially when half of you can't articulate what makes strategy consulting different from everything else.
This post is filled with a lot of very bitter-sounding people...
You’re right OP, I shouldn’t have been dismissive of Big 4 federal consulting, and I'm sure you have good teams doing good work.
I actually don’t work at McKinsey. And I think they’ve made some poor decisions. While the article is a little unfair, many insiders think McKinsey now has a culture problem to win at all costs.
However, I have done Big 4 Federal, and I’m familiar with the work McKinsey does. And I’ll tell you, by and large, they’re pretty different. But don’t believe me, look up bill rates. And no, McKinsey doesn’t have a separate workforce at lower bill rates (and all the implications that come with them).
Ultimately your repeated dismissiveness of McKinsey's federal business felt a little naive while trying to be condescending. Not a great look. I just don’t understand the need to insult others to feel good about one's work.
