My wife is a teacher in one of the top 5 wealthiest counties in the country now. When I was still in the army, she was teacher in one of the worst off states and counties in the country. If you only knew how bad it was there for a teacher... Pay and resources are much better where she is now but some things still generally kind of suck.

What do you mean when you say they are treated poorly? Also, that's a bold sweeping statement considering each school district varies quite a bit.
The solution is simple. They should all be strapping.

Some definitely are. It really depends on the district. I have a few family members that teach and their pay/benefits as well as student/family quality vary significantly.
