Write-Offs: My firm seems to write off 15-20 of my hours a month. Im billing between 150-180 a month. Is this bad?

As long as your realization rate is above 90% you're fine.

Assoc A 1,

For us, realization rate is the ratio of Billings to collections.

Normal

Are the write offs individual time entries or general write downs across all timekeepers? I think you’re within the acceptable range. It varies a lot depending on the projects were assigned to, but my firm seems to think anything above 80% realization is solid for an associate.

Its writeoffs of time entries. I’m not sure if its a complete write off or a discount/reduced amount of hours was applied.

I am curious.

What year and level are you and what are you practicing? Are these your cases or things you get randomly staffed for an assignment that’s rushed?

Yea so no offense, you’re effectively a first/second year in terms of your ability to do the work and do it efficiently. Just keep trying to do a good job and get the work done correctly. It’ll become second nature and what used to take you 3 hours might take you 2 or less in a years time.

Are you asking your supervising attorneys how much time should I spend on X task? Sometimes, it just has to be good enough.

They can’t write-off Non-billables 😝

California attorneys — I am having difficulty finding authority concerning the use of a rejected (partial) settlement offer to claim that a party failed to mitigate their damages. I.E. plaintiff could have mitigated if they accepted the (partial) settlement offer. Defendant offered to settle one claim (without affecting the others). Plaintiff rejected. The value of damages has increased over time and now defendant claims that plaintiff failed to mitigate because they did not accept the offer. TY

The amount of people, even attorneys, who can't separate out the policy merits of abortion from the issue of whether it is a constitutional right is disappointing. I consider myself pro-choice ---I believe states should allow it, that the federal government can pass a statute to guarantee it, and that FDA statutes and regulations will preempt any state trying to ban chemical abortions through FDA approved drugs. Dobbs at its core is a case about the Due Process Clause, not the policy of abortion
