Writer’s Block. What do you do when you gotta get the juices flowing again?

Get booze flowing first, the rest will follow

Couple of things I do...

1. If I have time, meaning that I don’t have a check in same day or next, I call it a day. When that block gets heavy, no amount of pushing will get that turd out. So I stop and do something else, anything, to take my mind off of that particular brief/ask/job.

2. I also just try writing shit down, even if it’s complete rubbish (and most likely it is). That does two things for me: makes me feel like I started working on it but it also could lead me somewhere. Maybe inside one of thkse half baked ideas/headlines there’s a nugget of something.

Good luck, don’t worry.

Here are two ways that work for me:

Brute force. Just write “the story.” I find that helps me get the ideas flowing again when I’m in a jam.

Not think about it for a while. Do something completely different that will occupy your mind. I used to play ping pong with my partner. Concentrating on something else can unblock BBC your mind and allow inspiration to happen.

Hope this helps

Go for a walk. Get away from the computer or paper for a bit.

Just start typing. Type anything. And do it fast. THen start typing things related to your brief (even if they're not ideas). Keep typing as fast as you can.

Then, start typing ideas. Not good ideas. Bad ones. Half ideas. One word ideas. Ideas that are off brief. Whatever. No filter, no judgment, just typing as fast as you can. You can delete it all later, just type.

If you are writing headlines, you can play games. Like, see if you can write 20 headlines in 5 minutes. Don't craft them, just write them. They can be shitty as hell. But don't stop.

If you're writing scripts, do a similar thing, but with script ideas. One sentences. How many can you write in 30 minutes? 20? 30? Set a goal and reach it no matter what.

Do this kind of stuff for an hour and you should be good.

Go for a walk and record yourself talking it out. Then type out what you recorded.

I practice Spanish on Duolingo for a bit of a reset before revisiting my project.

Write about something ... anything ... that you really enjoy and have passion for (for me, it's bad poetry). Do that for as long as you can get away with it. Hopefully, your mind/heart/hands will be ready when you jump to living that non-existent block right over. Just one trick of many.

If I’m to the point where everything feels flat because it’s become too linear sometimes I’ll draw with my left hand. Supposedly engages your right brain. But even just the act of doodling helps.

If I’m feeling like I don’t know where to start I write down a lot of bad ideas or really obvious ideas.

I’ll watch videos or movies or read things non ad related to inspire me.

I’ll meditate if I’m scattered or mentally tired. It’s a really good tool.

I’ll talk to someone else about it to rustle up ideas.

I also stay away from the computer at these points and try to jot down ideas. For me early on it’s better not to sit at the computer.

I’ll go for a walk or change rooms.

I’ll try to switch off and play a game or watch mindless tv or do a chore or cook something to let my subconscious work on it.

Also I try to watch the time of day. I’m most active mid morning and later evening. If it’s 3pm I’m a zombie.

Write through it. Someone better than me said “Writers block isn’t that you can’t write, it’s that you think everything you write sucks.” Grind and grind and grind. Writing never gets easy, you just get better at it.

Hi fishes,

I recently got selected in EY and about to join in April month. Now my husband is trying for H1B in his company. If he gets selected we should be moving next year jan or feb.

Is there any chance for me to ask EY GDS to put me in the same area (in US) provided that area has EY gds office?

Is that possible? Any process for that? Pls help as we have to decide.

I work in the interactive group at my agency. I had a chat with my CD today and said I’d like to move to another account soon. She asked what I’d want to do and I replied that I’d be happy on consumer goods, healthcare, banking, etc. She stopped me and said, no you need to decide if you want to be UX, a long form writer or other specialty. She said there’s no such thing as just being a “copywriter” any more. This sounds nuts to me. Is this an interactive thing? Have I been in this biz too long?

Is full-time freelance the only way big agencies hire outsourced talent? I've been approached by some decently big agencies who like my work, but will only bring me in if I commit to 40 hours/week. I have a handful of clients and can't exactly shut myself off from all opportunities because big agencies "need you available from 9am-6pm every day." Is this the only way to get in with well-known agencies? Do any allow for flat rate projects?

I am currently working at my first job straight out of uni. And I have been here for almost a year now. As it turns out, there isn't much that I did here that can be put on my portfolio--just random SM posts, banners, emailers, etc.
