Yay or nay to shutdown again for 4 weeks? Full shutdown to bring this damn virus under control once and for all so we can start rebuilding immediately after.

You need more than four weeks to get this under control, and you would need >80% compliance as well.

Here in Australia, where our epidemiological starting point was much better than yours is now and we have many natural advantages you lack (low pop density, universal healthcare, highly compliant population), it took a good 6-8 weeks to get things under control. Even then we may face a second wave.

Good luck.

If your stat is correct and has validity, it’s only a 10% difference. That’s not statistically significant.

The tyrannical tendencies of many here are out of control. Who gives any of us the moral authority to tell people what to do, force them not work and provide for their families, stop them from worship, etc?
It’s easy for us to lecture the world on lockdowns when all of us enjoy the insane privilege of working from home.
The whole point of the shutdown was to give the healthcare system time to ramp up capacity. Capacity is now up. The point was never to avoid the virus, rather to delay it. You cannot stop the virus from running its natural course unless there’s a vaccine. God knows how long and effective that’ll be.

Americans wouldn’t be down for that

like

Yeah our people are idiots...I apologize 🙈

likefunnysmart

We did it right in CT. You guys can shut down again, or just stay out of our state until you get this under control.

likefunnysmart

In favor in theory, but nay because Americans have demonstrated they lack the solidarity and empathy to successfully get through this period if it inconveniences them

likesmart

This is true

No, because this virus wil still be around even after 4 weeks. Shutting down everything is not the solution.

PwC 4 You would need over 300k cases per day in the US for two years to reach any kind of heard immunity

like

As long as hospital capacity is manageable and not overloaded, this will be the new normal. There has been new studies that the virus has mutated and generally weakened (mild to moderate symptoms)

likeuplifting

It’s definitely mutated because there are several known strains. Take a look a contact tracing data.

Covid is now one of many, many dangerous things in the world. Still less dangerous than driving a car or being obese. The idea that we should continue to destroy the economy and hide inside until there is a vaccine, which could take years, is crazy. At approx 125k deaths, out of 329 Million people, if you all did not own televisions you would never even know it even existed. Acceptable risk.

likeupliftingsmartfunny

Explain to everyone how mandating a mask is destroying the economy? Not mandating a mask is! So why would Texas and Florida wait until July to consider these steps?

Is there anything more exhausting than the New Yorkers (lumping in NJ and CT too) trashing other regions for their COVID responses? Yeah you guys flattened the curve like Stalin took care of the famine

likefunny

Really at P3 because Abbott was all about let the old people die!

Live in NYC. I wish the US would do a serious shutdown but a) no federal leader would do it b) compliance would be none existent and c) probably too late. Just going to keep dragging out and hopefully when there is a vaccine there is herd immunity because I bet you all the anti-vaxers are going to come out in full force.
Miss Australia where I grew up and our neighbours New Zealand.

I'm fine with the anti vaxxers doing their thing. If one disease was going to kill them all off, it might as well be this one. Head immunity works fine also by removing people from the population.

No reason, the virus will be gone Nov 4

The shutdown will never be long enough, more cases will always pop up. Rip off the band aid and let nature take its course. Good grief, let folks make their own decisions about their health. This isn’t the plague.

like

Totally agree... it is not the plague.

Nope.

People are not going to hunker down a second time.

Hell no. The shutdown was a dumb idea in the first place, we don’t need to do it again

With mass demonstrations in the streets, people do not want to hear “you can’t get your nails done or get a drink at a bar”

Perhaps false is the Wrong word?

New York, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Washington State all had very large protests without skyrocketing cases increases.

It would also be interesting to look at the populations experiencing surges in Texas and California to see if the protestors count as a significant percentage of the population seeing a surge.

The number of infections shouldn’t be the metric we optimize...there’s no vaccine and the virus is highly contagious.

We have a pretty good idea of who is at-risk. Instead of optimizing on total cases with one size fits all policies, we should be focusing on limiting deaths.

Protect the at-risk through the ADA, free healthcare and targeted basic universal income, in exchange for them partitioning themselves from society.

Open society to the rest while encouraging social distancing and ppe.

Locking down everyone isn’t the answer.

Life is mostly back to normal here in New Zealand, other than the tourism industry, which is a huge part if our economy.

But, everything is so fragile- it wouldn't take much to send us back into lockdown.

like

Nay for me if everyone just wear a damn mask and hand sanitizers available at all entry exit points. That would dramatically bring this contagion under control.

likesmart

It would be political suicide. No one is going to even bring it up

like

Texas already has. Other states will also. It'll kill a lot more people not to and whole southern governors can be stubborn idiots they do like to keep voters around to vote for them.

Republican states can shut down for 8 weeks. We shut down for 110 days in New York. Our wave 1 is complete. I hope people will start taking this seriously. If not, it’s gonna get ugly.

like

If NY was actually testing like we are today, I'd be curious what their actual cases per day were during the original outbreak. We're comparing apples to oranges right now on a pure case basis due to the testing capacity just wasn't there at the beginning.
