Year 5. Have been thinking about a career change to become a real estate developer. I like my job but don’t love it and have always found real estate stuff extremely interesting. If anyone has any insight in real estate development and if you are a RE attorney who has insight into RE development, I’d love to chat with you and hear about your perspective. Thank you!

I’m still in biglaw but my brother in law is a RE developer and I do some small deals on the side.

I would save your cash/bonuses and try to do a small deal on the side to see if you like it. Maybe do a fourplex or a small commercial building and see if you have the appetite. RE dev is fun but there is the other side of the coin of working with local gov, contractors, etc.

Depends what you mean and where you’re located. If you’re in any of the major metropolitan areas and want to do this on any kind of scale you’ve gotta have deep political ties and be willing grind with some ruthless competition. Building homes in a middle America suburbia wouldn’t be too complicated though

Are there any roles out there needing a clearance? I feel I am wasting away in Cyber at Deloitte because they don’t want to teach me real skills. I want to learn penetration testing, cyber intel, or cyber stuff utilizing a clearance. I have a TS/SCI and certs on the DOD 8570 but no one wants to help train me.

Sometimes I feel like my teams don’t know when to pull in strategy to meetings. There will be days that I’m booked morning to evening and I really didn’t need to be on half the calls, and others where I’m not even invited when, in reality, my attendance should’ve been mandatory. Is anybody else struggling with this? I’ve communicated this to my teams but they don’t seem to understand what I mean.

Need some advice.. What are the best firms in NY to do a decent amount of appellate litigation?

Or ideally join an appellate/issues and appeals group (following an appellate clerkship)

I recently lateraled to big law from a medium to large sized firm. I was generally very happy with the people I worked with at the previous firm and moderately happy with the work I was doing. I left because I was concerned about the viability of the firm, but I really hate my new firm. People aren’t as nice as I’m used to, no positive reinforcement, etc. My old firm told me I was always welcome to come back. How long do I wait to go back if that’s ultimately what I decided I wanted to do?

Mid-level here. Has anyone gotten their firm to approve their doing work at a deep discount and, if so, what strategies did you use? A potential client approached me directly about a small matter (~20 to 30 hr amicus brief). The potential client (gov’t) pays a standard rate ~40% lower than mine, but I want to take on the project because it would be a good professional opportunity (e.g., high profile case & client) and of course the lower rate won’t affect my comp directly. 🤷‍♀️ All advice welcome!

Serious question - I feel like I work very long hours but then I see people here talking about 300+ hour months constantly. Do you guys pause the timer if you go have a meal, go use the bathroom or take a 30 min nap in the middle of the day? Maybe I don’t know how to bill? I’m worried

Does your practice group make associates do mock motion arguments every week?! my practice group assigns random motions from old cases that i’ve never worked on for each junior associate to “argue” every week….

I feel like this is a huge waste of billable time, and also patronizing. I understand we need to learn, but why not do mock arguments with our current caseload?! this is abnormal? I think i landed in the wrong firm.

Note: this is non-billable work
