Forts off - CONGRATULATIONS! Second- Hire a swim coach, be explicit about your level and your goals. The swim is the hardest part of the event but your sense of accomplishment after you CRUSH it will be amazing!

I'd highly recommend doing the Total Immersion swim class as most of us have horrible water balance

Re: bike - many places will rent amazing bikes to you for race day. I do NYC Tri and always rent. It’s under $100 for a top of the line bike.

Don’t feel bad. As much as I think that is now something I might splurge for, if we’re honest, it’s not going to make that much difference to OP who isn’t racing for speed, or dad-bod guys like me.

Awesome! I did a sprint tri in my thirties and it was a blast. This has me thinking I’ll do another, maybe longer, next year. I am now mid-40s and training for my first ever marathon in the fall, but I’m overweight and only started running late in life. My thoughts: - Swim is by far the thing that most people, and it sounds like you too, will find least familiar. I did train a decent amount and watched a lot of instructional videos on how to improve form and swim more efficiently. I still ran out of gas early. I second the recommendation above if you’re serious about it - if you have the means and can commit to it, I think a swim coach or even class is the most bang for your buck you can get in terms or time improvement and enjoyment of the race. Pro (amateur) tip: switch to breast stroke or backstroke if you must. They are slower than freestyle, but part of the fun and challenge is swimming in close proximity to others, so there is lots of splashing and limbs flying. Between getting tired fast because you’re not a strong swimmer, snd the fact that those strokes allow you to breathe much easier, have no shame in using them to just get the swim over with as little drama as possible. - Bike: pretty easy. As you said, you can ride a bike. Training will increase your toughness and shave a little time. It’s actually a pretty good way to gain some distance on the people behind you. Your chances of catching the people ahead of you are pretty slim; if they’re good swimmers, chances are they can ride pretty fast, too. Run: this will sound like a humble brag and I don’t mean it to, but I believe just about anyone can finish a 5K. Not necessarily race it fast, or catch the young skinny people, but finish. I think you can too. I think the run is a great way to finish because you can find that surge of energy to catch someone. It’s just a huge rush to have completed these other events and then see the finish close at hand, leave it all out on the course and track down that person who passed you on that cycling hill climb. OK, I think I need to do another tri…

Find someone to train with! It is a lot of fun and helpful motivation. Agree with finding either a swim coach, lessons, or a training group for tri swimming. It’s really helpful.

Dads with older children: while raising your children, did your children prefer their moms over you? I know some will prefer dads over moms, but I assume majority of children out there will prefer their moms over dads… I have one child and it kinda hurts to see my child always preferring the mom over me.
