You cannot tie WLB to the company. It is project dependent! A big company will always have projects with both good WLB and bad, but I think it’s never tied to the company. Agree or disagree?

Project dependent, yes. But more than that I think it’s person dependent. Once you get comfortable setting your own boundaries a lot changes. Obviously easier said the more senior you get

Yes and no. It is project dependent to a certain extent but the company leadership ultimately sets the tone. If they prioritize profits over all else then it trickles down. In other orgs where employee experience is prioritized, there’s safeguards to protect WLB and training to senior management provided to avoid this.

Came here to say the same. Leadership sets the tone and that can make the difference even on projects with bad WLB. What’s in place for after the burner project? What support is there if the burner is really too much? Is it a project that inherently has bad WLB or is the manager just doing a poor job of prioritizing around WLB? Etc.

Agreed

There's definitely a lot of variability within a company, but there are definitely different averages across companies and industries.

May be project dependent for the large consulting cos. Not the case for boutique/niche firms (at least in my case). 40h/wk is expectation at any time. Very limited travel.

Agreed. 45 minimum billable (assuming no additional eaten hours on a fixed fee engagement to preserve margin under pressure from the partner) at B4 plus expectations for other work if you don’t want to be poorly rated make things add up very quickly.

Disagree. Talk to an IB person.

That may be true, but the culture is tied to the company.

Thoughts on joining a boutique consulting firm during this economy? Is it typically viewed as safer or riskier than bigger firms? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I know many of the bigger firms had layoffs but I imagine they have much more in the pipeline/budget/resources whereas boutique firms may or may not have had layoffs (is there a reputable source about this online?) but have fewer of the other items.
