You guys are such a helpful and open bunch, I’d love some insight from this bowl... So I very recently turned 30 and I’ve spent the past 8 years working in various marketing jobs. I’m currently a “Marketing copywriter” at a big Financial Services brand. The pay is great, benefits are good, but Im BORED out of my mind. And I’ve been feeling this way for a while...I switched companies two years ago and then to a diff role a year into this current company. (Continued in comments...)

Not unwise AT ALL. It sounds like the perfect time to take a risk.

The only red flag for me in your entire scenario is the internship component. I came to this line of work in a strange way, so I have perhaps dumb questions: 1. Would this be paid? Would it be paid at a level you feel comfortable living for the time needed to complete? 2. Would the program be willing to work with you on this requirement to accommodate your non-standard student situation? I say if you have no partner, no kids, and are only managing your own life, this is THE TIME to do this. Go get your dream job! Or ... you know... at least one that interests you. 😊👍🏻 Good luck!!

If you’ve put this much thought into it, and you haven’t talked yourself out of it yet (and are rather trying to figure out how to make it happen - which it looks to me like this post is asking for reassurance to do what you want to do - and we say yes!), I think it’s what your heart wants. Go for it! And I’m 36 - I lived with my grandparents from 26-27, and with my parents at 30 after grad school. If you’re privileged enough to have housing security and support to go do this, go for it! It sounds like you’re in the perfect place to take the leap. If you want it, go get it. You can always change jobs in the future, this is giving you a bigger toolbox for future you. Best of luck!!

Go after it. One thing I want to add: I keep seeing/hearing a lot about ageism and misogyny in the industry. My take on this is that rather than accepting that “this is how it is” we are better off creating change. So more women in their 30s/40s/50s/60s+ entering the industry and changing its traditional makeup is exactly what we need (I say this as a mid-30’s industry-switcher who is still making my way but extremely sick of the archaic gate-keeping that exists).

I went to ad school in my late 20s and started in the industry at 30. I had an in-house job in a much more interesting industry than finance but found it boring af because the work wasn’t creative, so I totally get why you’re unhappy with it. Personally, I would not want to start in the industry these days. Ageism and sexism are an issue, yes, but not at all my reasons for saying that. I’ve been watching advertising become less and less fun over the past decade. The little perks that made up for thankless junior work are disappearing. I had a better experience as a junior than most people at the time (and probably 95% of juniors today), and I still deeply regretted the debt that I racked up going to ad school. My advice would be minimize your debt as much as possible and don’t expect the job to be fulfilling or glamorous.

This is the right time. FWIW I went through something very similar around 30. No partner or kids. Just looking for something a little more challenging and less soul sucking. I think it’s a mix of this stage of life as well as starting to age out of what makes agency/marketing perks fun. Do what you love. It’s cheesy and sometimes a longer road, but do what you love.

Do it, try it. It feels scary because you actually want it. You can’t predict what’s going to happen in the future, except that you’ll keep changing and your life will keep changing. Follow your passion and see where it takes you. You can choose a different path anytime you want, no matter what age you are.

All the interesting work goes to external agencies. All I really do is repurpose it for our email newsletters or brochures. My job is rly easy - I rarely write anything from scratch. Anyway, about a year ago I started looking into portfolio schools to make the switch into creative advertising. I started a CW portfolio program online in the summer with the whole stay at home thing, and I’m really enjoying it so far. The thing is, it’s been really hard to balance with full-time work (it’s a full-time program not really aimed at people with day jobs) and with the internship component in the second year, I’m going to have give up my current job soon. So my question is...as a woman in her 30s (no partner + kids yet), would I be crazy to keep pursuing this??? I know I wasn’t satisfied with my current career trajectory (tbh I don’t know what the trajectory would’ve been?? Stick it out and become a people manager someday? Get an MBA?) but I’m also wondering if I’m being really unwise in considering leaving a cushy corporate job for an industry that’s reportedly unkind to women and anyone over the age of 35... (allegedly, I haven’t been in it). Anyway, any insights? Stories to share? Words of wisdom?? I’ve been going with the flow my whole “career” so far so this feels like a big, scary change.

If you're at Miami Ad School, the second year of internships is pretty superfluous. Get your portfolio ready then get out. If you must, do one internship you really care about and get hired at that agency. Happy to chat further about this via dm!

Could you not do the internship (assuming it’s part time) and job at the same time? Seems like job is a breeze with it being boring, and with everything being remote, I would just do both if it’s just for a semester.

I also completely changed up my trajectory near 30. I was a 30-year-old intern. And I think all my prior life and work experience propelled me further forward faster. Do it!

Wonder if people who claim to be more effective and efficient thanks to WFH and wish to never go back to the office are the same people whose jobs are more likely to get off-shored/ outsourced? At the end of the day, if it's just a transactional, "follow-the script" kind of job requiring minimal interaction/relationship/collaboration with other team members, why would the companies be incented to keep paying salaries + benefits when they can just as easily ship these jobs overseas?
