If you look back in history, you can find dozens of examples of people staying quiet and/or saying listen to both sides: women’s suffrage, slavery, flat earth, gay marriage, birth control, segregation, redlining, caste system, genital mutilation, bi-racial marriage, etc... it is up to us individually and as a society to build the world we want to live in and pass on.
This post tried to took my hope in humanity...but this post...

And you realize that many of us speaking now have been quiet up until now because we had similar concerns that being vocally anti-racist and being straightforward about police brutality would hurt our careers?
You had your safe space for years. Times up.

SA2 yesssss! The former silenced are now the vocal!
Agreed and it will get DT elected again and there will be outrage because people only see what they want to see.

@AS1 - I think it’s important to view the election in a much broader context. Electing a president isn’t just about the individual but who they appoint to their cabinet, judicial seats, and various other appointed positions. While I don’t think Biden will necessarily lead the charge into the future, I think he will put people in place to do that.
If he’s elected, he’ll have the first woman VP ever. Kind of crazy that’s never happened, but that isn’t a status quo. That’s progress.
There’s also speculation that if he’s elected that more people below 50 would be in his cabinet (Pete Buttigieg, Andrew Yang, etc). This is vital, because the world is changing rapidly (i don’t need to tell you that). We need leaders who will usher in a government that can respond to technology changes, energy, cyber warfare, a completely different economy, and an understanding of the new world we live in. The republicans simply don’t provide those leaders - and there’s a reason they don’t have them. We also need leaders to reverse the detriment that has been done to the education department, epa, department of interior, and energy department. As a whole, it’s crucial to have leadership right now and it’s seems like we’re lacking that altogether.
I appreciate you sincerely listening and having a respectful conversation. I say this to everyone (on both sides) - but I plea that everyone has more than one news source and avoids extreme sources like Fox, CNN, and MSNBC. I personally use WSJ, Economist, Politico, and PBS.
On a final note - congrats on becoming a US citizen! Not sure when that happened, but it’s awesome to see you’re politically active. Glad to call you a fellow American.

Cool, go back to 1950. Oh sorry, you missed that ship.
This country is diverse and it will become even more diverse. Poor communities will be uplifted, you’re not stopping this.

AAG1,
I have friends who are conservative and definitely aren’t neo Nazi’s. I understand there are fanatics in all parties. So, I disagree with your mischaracterization of my arguments.
However, I would like to know what is the “differing opinion” to my opinion that funding should be shifted from police to community reform.
Are you assuming the Black community is naturally criminal and wouldn’t benefit from increased government spending in an attempt to lower crime?

The point is that people don’t wanna get jumped in conversation, so rather than try talking they’ll just stay quiet.

Yes some people want to support the status quo, which is de facto racist, without being called racist themselves. Understandable, but other people are ready for change.
Silent majority, baby!
Being the loudest one doesn’t always make you right.
A lot of these posts are proving OP's point. Which is people are being ruined for having differing opinions. I believe most people agree that we all have a duty to make this world a better place for all, regardless of color. But not everyone wants to play into the virtue signaling and pandering going on. I mean, God forbid someone actually support the police nowadays.
And this is the problem with people like you: serious inability to think about these matters in a nuanced manner. I never said or implied consequences are “bad.” I clearly accepted the possibility of bad consequences. That I think your position of ACTIVELY ENCOURAGING bad consequences (in the form of “ruining” lives) is a reprehensible one, is not logically inconsistent with accepting that possibility generally.
All sides need more understanding and less jumping down throats
Well I apologize for the misunderstanding because that is not what I meant. Just reading through these threads people can be so quick to speak down to others, it just doesn’t seem productive or effective. People can have civil disagreements and present facts in ways to spread understanding and awareness, but we constantly see people on both sides digging in to what they are saying further and ignoring the other side.
Anyway I’m not here to argue, that would defeat the purpose. I am trying to see what everyone is saying from all other views and learn. Take care 👋

People need to speak up....
“They came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."

Welcome to why Trump won 2016 and why he’s going to win 2020.
I say this as someone who hates the dude and it pisses me off.
Pro
Director 1 The DNC pushing a hated centrist candidate into seat caused Trumps election. The moment Clinton was elected to run for Democratic presidency it was over because she is hated by both the far left and the right. Biden is the same. This has nothing to do with Black people wanting the police to not be able to kill them unarmed without punishment.

I bet you money OP voted for Trump
This response is the apotheosis of what is wrong. Proving OP correct

It takes impressive mental gymnastics to attempt to twist “some of my beliefs are so monstrous that if I said them, I’d be fired” into some kind of noble cause or martyrdom.
OP, you realize some people don’t have to bite their tongues 24/7 because they have reasonable beliefs. If your beliefs suck so much you wouldn’t dare say them aloud, that’s on you, not anyone else. Maybe you should examine them.
If you run into a***holes all day, you’re the a**hole.
Not sure how “if your beliefs suck so much you wouldn’t dare say them out loud and that’s only on you” works in the same thread where so many people are arguing that “they’ve waited so long to finally be able to speak out about anti-racism and police brutality because they couldn’t before”

I had a long fb discussion today with someone who thought racism no longer exists. Did I change their mind? Unlikely. Did I hopefully give them food for thought? Yup

Denying racism is one of the most racist things you can do IMO. At least someone in a White Supremacist group has a stance.
The very same people who deny racism cross the street in broad daylight when they see a Black man in the distance.
Chief
OP, I followed the logic until the last statement. Are you saying this silent contingent needs a safe space they have been denied somehow? Because if so, ironic.
Chief
Explain the last line.

What are things you’d like to say, that you think are fine, that you would get fired for?

I believe if I were overheard to discuss FBI violent crime stats as an example of how sometimes things can be overrepresented or underrepresented in the data, I could get fired for it.
Everyone who is upset by what OP said — this week, ask ALL of your Democratic-leaning family and friends if they’re registered to vote. Literally put the stamp on the freaking envelope on their registration. Help people send their ballots in and send them reminders. If everyone does this with 5 people that MFer is out.

You’d be smart to focus on the 4 or 5 states that allowed trump to win... or rather the handful of counties.
White Americans listen to music made by black people and make tiktoks to it, do their hair in braids until they realize it’s inappropriate, try to speak like black people and when black people are asking you to please stop killing them you stay silent and now playing the victim card? Poor Karens and Chads.
This isn’t in reference to like a French braid or anything, it’s in reference to white people (the kardashians a classic example) appropriating corn rows and calling it something new
