I watch anthemic commercials like the Nike ones or some older apple ones. Anything a little overwritten. Also spoken word poetry sometimes helps!
The easy first stop is Google “brand manifesto” image search. And there’s always Mad Men Carousel. If you want deeper emotional resonance, look to great speeches: Gettysburg Address, MLK I Have A Dream, JFK at Rice University We Choose The Moon, even Shakespeare’s Henry V speech to English troops outnumbered by superior troops ahead of the Battle of Agincourt.
I know this is dumb but when I’m stuck writing a manifesto I’ll write an obituary of the brand or product. It helps get me “unstuck” sometimes
Amazing
I like to flip through my copy of “The Art of Looking Sideways” by Alan Fletcher. It’s a big fat book filled with disparate images, quotes, and wisdom arranged into loose categories like “style” “value” “culture” “aesthetics” etc.
Made by a designer, but not just for designers. I’ll flip to the section that feels most in line with the work I’m creating and usually there’s something in there that jogs some thoughts.
Or I read Mark Fenske’s website.
I have that book. I second this.
Literally just the last manifesto you wrote. They’re all the same.
Great suggestions! I like listening to a few episodes of “The Moth” or watching a TED talk to give me some sparks
...watching The West Wing usually does it for me
Sorkin loves a good, rambling-but-passionate CTA.
Read the miller high life manifesto written by Gerry Graf
Yes it was spearheaded by Gerry but he didn’t write it alone. It also included Andy Carrigan, Ralph Watson, Mitch Gage, and Kristin Graham.
Look for people that enjoy talking about their craft regardless of their work. I love actors reciting poetry or letters, Nowness films or just YouTube clips of creatives talking about their passion.
Look up spoken word poetry. That shit is inspiring and moving and well written. There's tons of it on YouTube
