You know something that really annoys me? Sometimes, when I get a cold call I’ll politely answer “im not interested at this time.” Then the person on the other end will ask “why are you not interested.” It is at this point I choose violence.

You just repeat it again. Channel your inner Larry David.

Just remember you don't owe them anything. You should politely decline but if it doesn't make sense its ok to say (and leave it at that). If they keep pushing, just work towards ending the conversation or painting to following up via email.

Email is also significantly more straightforward to decline follow-ups.

Punting, not painting*

As someone who used to make cold calls, I will say that you are required (as part of the job), to make anywhere from 1-3 “attempts” to “save, rebuff,” etc. when someone just immediately says “no” or “not interested.” IF they’ve actually heard your pitch AND THEN they say “no” a second time, most employers are willing to let you leave it at that. My advice to all my family and friends when dealing with cold callers is this: If you truly have no interest in what they have to say, the best thing to do (for both of you) is to say, “No thank you” and immediately hang up. This way they do not have to do the required rebuttal, you do not have to waste your time or be rude, and everyone can go about their day.

Yes! Literally happened today. I actually got on here to ask how to make these people go away 😂

Depends on what they’re selling.
For the vehicle warranty people, I tell them that my truck is 25 years old, with 350k miles. It’s lasted this long, what’s to put under warranty?
For the real estate agents, I just tell them Nope! Call my son when I’m dead. then I hang up.
For most others who won’t take “sorry I’m not interested” I’ll tell them that on the advice of counsel, I’ve been told to not make commitments or big decisions now. Would you like to speak to the lawyer? Sometimes I don’t even get that second sentence out before they hang up, but I’ve had 100% success getting them to hang up by the end of the second line.

i started just saying” i do not wish to continue this conversation further”. it’s my nice way of saying to F off before actually having to say it

You know what? I only answered the phone because I thought it was a call I was expecting. I really don’t have time to talk and I’m not interested so I need to go. Thanks and bye.

Or if you try to be polite and they push again and you have time, “it doesn’t really matter why if I already said no, does it?” And then they say we’ll, some people assume X and if they only understood Y. To which you interject “well that would be awfully rude to tell someone you are trying to convince to buy your service that they aren’t smart enough to know what their business priorities are, but do go ahead and educate me.”

But mostly. Don’t answer unknown numbers. My phone rings I might get one voicemail a month where I accidentally ignored a real call.

I’m amazed how many people actually engage in a conversation. Don’t you just hang up when you realize it’s a cold call?

I mean, if I was off my game enough to answer the phone in the first place I’m not going to be a jerk unless they get pushy. They are just doing their job. But if they start to argue with me? Then it’s either yeah, no and just hang up. Or amuse myself for a minute. Depends on the mood.

You have the free will to hang up a phone call at any point in your life. This is a good time to exercise it.

Those of you pushing 40, how many of you have a career plan? I honestly don’t know what my next step is. I figure I’ll stay at my company for the next couple of years but then what? I have no clue. Here's an excerpt from today's Chicago Tribune: "State officials ...reported 625 new known <COVID> cases, which pushes the statewide total to 129,837."
So this number of cases - 129, 837 - that's cumulative, right? Meaning, as more cases are identified, their numbers are added to the total. But wouldn't some people recover by now, which would mean that there are significantly fewer than 130K sick people in the state?
