I was once invited to NASA to address group of scientists. I asked how many of you have actually flown in space shuttle. None of them raised their hands.
I was then, rightfully shown the door for assuming that one needs to ‘do’ something to actually advise about it.
Most people who work at large businesses, including their executive team, haven’t started or run their own businesses either to be fair
Given the partnership structure, don’t the more senior (real) partners technical run their own business?
I joined the firm after starting, running and selling two different companies, and I know for a fact I am not unique at the firm. For sure not the usual profile at McKinsey, but I would say that is true for any consulting or industry firms. So like most things a generalization that doesn’t say anything other than people like to throw darts at others

Consultants always tell businesses what to do but they don't live that life
'Do' and 'start' are very different. But many consultants do have their heads in the clouds when it comes to actually getting things done in the real world.
I always likened it to being an analyst / announcer vs playing in the game. Some people really like it in booth, but it'll never be the same.
