Told my counselor I was working on rolling-off my long-term project and finding a project that interested me...that I was going to own my career. He told me to remember that I'm just a staff.
Biggest lie of all time. Possibly Trump owns all our firms.
Translation: "Here's your staff aug. position. Have fun in the basement!"
It's a complete lie. The second you try to own your career is the second the wrath of the firm will be released upon your non chargeable ass. I'll be happily leaving the firm once I find a good position. It's sad because I would've happily kicked ass for EY for a long time if I was allowed to work in a competency I found interesting. I hope the PPEDs actually read these threads and implement changes
Me: so I was hoping to take this training. Management: that adds no value to this engagement and you'll be busy editing decks so kindly no. But remember you own your career
Accenture misleads us with the same baloney. Guess all our firms are the same. Sigh.
And that's why I'm leaving at the end of the month. Found an industry role in the function and industry I want. FINALLY! After trying to own my career for 3 years and doing shit work I don't like. I do like consulting as a whole though, so going to try and pivot back, this time in the area of interest since I would have industry experience.
Brutal truth: you own your career AND you still need to make sure you're adding value in the short term. Which means you may have to pick your battles if the ideal project for you just isn't available.
It means nothing except take responsibilty for your own career at EY. No one else gives a crap unless you are not chargeable.
^we are in the same choke hold
It also means to find your own path. Staff have to align with a practice at some point so you need to build that relationship and begin defining what you want your career to be within that practice. YOU DO OWN THIS!
You DO own it. Don't wait, take charge.
^^ lol.
Last time I looked you can always quit and do something else. Ergo you do own your life and your career. But yeah in the consulting firm you pretty much do what they tell you unless you sell your own projects at a good price then you can do almost anything. It's about who and what brings food to the table...
Own your career /= do whatever you want regardless of hitting firm goals. It's a marathon not a sprint, y'all. (I'm a SM raised in consulting. I know of what I speak)
OW1 is wise. 🕵🏻
Don't buy into the marketing and sales BS. It's consulting. It's always about chargeability and revenue. Own your career = make sure you bring in the $$
Well... What ARE you interested in? If you aren't getting that where you are, it's probably time to look for a new place!
So what would you trade off? Would you give up a guaranteed salary to "own your career"? If so - why not just become an independent consultant?
