I’d think long and hard about this relationship and if it is truly the distance causing the cracks. Then I’d keep my job.

Decide right now which you’ll regret not pursuing in 10 years; if you think your SO is the person for you, life’s too short to let a job keep you from that happiness. You can always find a new job, its much harder to replace someone who’s meaningful to you

I wouldn’t let a job get in the way of a serious relationship, ever. Job opps will come and go, but the same people do not.

Do you want to marry the SO? How many time zones away is SO from current job?

like

How many time zones are “very different”? Like c’mon kid, you know what we’re asking. And if you want to marry your SO, didn’t you discuss the new job with them and talk about the pros and cons and new challenges it’ll bring before accepting it?

In a LDR for ~3ish years due to work and visa issues (which COVID didn’t help with unfortunately). Ultimately, what I noticed is that the best thing to do is voice said uncertainties and thoughts to your SO. They’re likely thinking/going-through the same thoughts as you so any reassurance/discussion goes a long way. End goal is to set a date/time-frame for closing the distance so instead of the future seeming like an endless dark pit it’s a light at the end of the tunnel situation. Good luck!

Why is your SO not moving? I think in certain circumstances it makes sense but not without considering all options. It sounds like you have something really good going on and you don’t want to be resentful unless you moving is clearly the best option.

like

Can you use some of your newly acquired funds to visit more frequently? Doubt your manager will let you work abroad.

like

Is moving abroad an option for you, regardless of this job? Most people can't just pack up and move internationally - you need the right visa. So before you quit your job, consider what your next step would be if you did. What was the discussion with your SO about your future before they moved? LDRs should be temporary, with a plan in place for one/both to relocate.

like

Figure out which one is easier to replace. Then ask your SO to move to you because you kept your job

funny

I’d first ask to work remote. Many managers are flexible and if they see you’re a good worker, it’s often not much of an issue. Perhaps ask for 3 months first then see if the relationship is better then you can extend/quit if need be. I’m currently in a LDR for one year and we’ve discussed that at 18 months we’ll see if it’s worth getting married and I’ll probably get him a K1 visa to see if he likes living in the US or if I’ll ultimately move to him.

Genuine question: What are the most common exit options at Google BizOps? (1) For internal transfer to PM, those teams seem to prefer to hire Google engineers. (2) For internal transfer to Chief of Staff, why those teams don’t promote their own Strategy & Op folks? (3) For BizOps internal promotion, there are not many Director positions. (4) For leaving Google, I don’t know where people usually go… Please share your thoughts / correct me if I’m wrong. Thanks!
