Docker Desktop has a corner on the containerized virtualization market for developers. That said, they pissed off a bunch of people with their licensing changes earlier this year and the market is ripe for disruption. It's a pretty safe bet for now, especially in enterprise markets - but I'd bet in 5 years time it won't be the only simple* option for most people.
*Yes there are things like Colima, but you eventually end up fighting with them in ways you just don't with DD today.
Critical to efficiently execute
Rising Star
We use Docker with Kubernetes. Yes it is critical to our stack because Kubernetes runs better in conjunction with Docker. Until we find a replacement, Docker is our solution for sharing container images.
Ask Docker to give you technical papers and hands-on demo. They’re pretty responsive.
Containerization is critical to most medium to large companies. But Docker Desktop is a pretty paint finish on top of a freely available containerization solution. Any company can do without it, with Docker native solutions on Linux and OSX. Windows with WSL also has an easy workaround.
So, long story short - if Docker thinks they can corner the market and make people pay license fees for a pretty paint finish, they're sorely wrong and will be hit hard with reality by competition very soon.
