Your thoughts on if the SHRM certification actually helped or benefited you?

Following. Considering this or a PHR.

I have the PHR and recommend the SHRM as that’s what most companies are looking for.

PHR over SHRM-CP. Just my two cents. I have both.

like

Really? I recommend the opposite. I have my PHR but see that most companies are seeking the SHRM.

It helped a ton with my job search!!! I was able to apply for jobs that required a little more experience than I had, but recruiters took me a lot more seriously with the SHRM certification. I was also able to ask for higher pay than my normal range due to the certification backing my knowledge.

like

I agree with this!

IMO, it helps if you have less than 5 yrs of experience in moving to a higher role faster and it does give you the credentials and a good foundation to do HR. I did get more callbacks with my SHRM-CP and I was able to leverage it for a higher comp and a L&D plan to keep my credentials. I’ve seen the PHR viewed as being better because they have stricter requirements to take the test vs SHRM-CP. It doesn’t trump experience though.

like

It helped my confidence. When I first got my PHR, I do believe it helped to show I have the know how of basic HR (my undergraduate degree is not HR related). I went on for my SPHR which wasn’t necessary, but again helped my confidence and leaders do look at it when starting new roles. Many fortune 50 companies look for assessment criteria and this is just one of many options.

like

I had built up my reputation and had a lot of experience working for a fortune 30 company. I don’t necessarily need the SPHR given the work experiences. It’s more about being able to articulate them and show my value vs a test at this point in my career.

It helped from a personal learning standpoint, but I'm not sure it really played much of a role in getting new/better jobs.

likesmart

Yes, but it was not a replacement for a degree which is what I had hoped for (along with my 15 years of experience).

like

I got a lot more recruiters popping on my LinkedIn.

It is not only related to my SPHR, but I also got a raise after passing.

like

I just passed the exam about about a month ago and I’d really like to know as well. No changes for me so far but I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

like

It taught me a lot which was great but didn’t add anything to my career. I’m glad I learned all of the content but the certification itself didn’t do anything for me.

like

Just take a look at the postings out there, over 50% of them prefer either the SHRM or HRCI. In my opinion it helps, and has helped my career. Not just on a broad knowledge standpoint, but also making me more marketable. I have the SHRM-SCP, and the PHR without which I would not feel confident in this landscape of growing “preferences” towards certifications.

like

I earned a PHR, then achieved a SPHR and received the SHRM certification by watching a webinar because I already had a SPHR. The SHRM certification hasn’t done anything for my career.

I think what I learned from studying for the certification tests was helpful. I’ve found that only HR people care about the certifications and the SPHR is becoming harder to maintain. You need 60 CEUs with 15 being business credits and now one credit needs to be ethics based. The reasoning makes sense but finding the specialized credits can be difficult. I’ve been thinking about letting the certifications expire and explaining to future employers how I keep my knowledge up-to-date. I know many director and VP level HR professionals who aren’t certified and their careers are doing just fine.

like

Absolutely. In my opinion SHRM or HRCI certs hold great value when staying competitive for HR jobs. I personally saw an increase in interest when speaking to Recruiters

It was helpful for me for sure, especially since my degree was not HR or Business related.

The PHR and the SHRM have helped me, massively!! Depending on what industry you're in or want to transition to, an HR cert can sometimes be the deciding factor between 2 awesome candidates. The HRCI exams are not only accredited, but tried and true. They present enough challenge in terms of passing. Not ever HR prof. has one making those who do, stand out. The SHRM, I've seen starting to gain more popularity and often times it's not uncommon to have both.

I don't put it on my resume. It was a requirement to get my Master's, and that matters a lot more.

As others have stated, it does help if you are searching for a new opportunity. Most HR job postings prefer someone with a certification. For me personally, it did nothing to assist with the day-to-day responsibilities. It has however landed me a new role with higher compensation.

Good if you are early in your career. For me it’s not gonna help.

Hello fellow recruiters! I am looking to add credentials and have been seeing a lot about the SHRM TA Speciality Credential. Has anyone heard good/bad things about this or have any input on any credentials for a fellow recruiter? Or do you feel it’s best to just go for SHRM-CP or SCP?

I think this Q is applicable to this bowl. My daughter is in 6th grade and plays a lot of sports. She sometimes has 4 or more games per day in a tournament. What are some good snacks or small meals she can eat between games? She is 11 and a little picky (ex. doesn’t like nuts). She needs something to give her energy but not too heavy in her stomach. Often only has 10mins between games to scarf something down. Ideas?
