Absolutely yes. That is insulting and minimizing and counter productive. She is cancerous. OUT.
I’m a woman so I assume most are. But I take your point!
The tone of the comment is kind of important. It could also mean championing or making sure it’s considered in a good way. But since you’re asking you probably don’t think they meant t that way. “Playing the diversity card” has definite negative connotations, but waving a flag could be positive
Yes. This sounds pretty offensive. The tip I’ve heard is to ask people ‘what do you mean by that?’ when they say things that hit you the wrong way. The worst feeling is doubting that your anger is legitimate.
At least it forces a moment where they can reflect and hopefully correct themselves. Or...own up to their prejudices, if that’s what’s driving their language choices.
I have a tendency to say things the wrong way. Not that great with words I guess. Never meant to hurt anyone in my life though. Maybe just ask him/her out, and let them know it bothered you before you bring out the forks and torches?
I thought waving a flag for something and being an advocate is the same thing? Intent is whats important here not the interpretation of a figure of speech. Ask what they meant by it before being offended.
The thing is that the usage is typically derisive. It could go either way with someone who didn’t realize that, but I’m betting that’s not the case here. Here’s the first definition from a quick Google search: “You can use flag-waving to refer to the expression of feelings for a country in a loud or exaggerated way, especially when you disapprove of this.”
Yeah, definitely. If past experiences indicated the supervisor were a good person with solid ethics who misspoke and meant something more like “leading the charge in our diversity efforts”... you wouldn’t be asking this.
Yes, offended & ashamed
Creative people, shall we be logical for a mere second and ask what was the tone and situation? It’s fairly easy to throw rocks at people without knowing the full context. If the dude/dudette said it with the intention of offending someone, yes she/he is a d. Bag. If the intention wad to advocate in behalf of the OP, the words used could have been wrong but the intention was good. We’re not all perfect, so just ask and watch for follow up behaviour?
“Waving the diversity flag” is the same as saying “playing the black card.” I would be pissed
How? “Waving the flag” means to stand up, support, or defend someone or something. I think context is needed here and she should clarify with the person quoted rather than ask for insight from people who were not there.
I’m not a WOC and I’m offended. We should advocate for diversity whether we are part of it or not. We can’t work towards it being a non-issue when it gets flagged in this manner
People really need to stop getting offended. Please, enough. This doesn't merit it unless they meant it in some derogatory way and not in "I'm teasing you right now" way. Stop. Please.
Yes & pissed
As a POC I think this is fine. It’s like the rainbow flag. It can be a bit much sometimes when sometimes actually means 100% of the time
Context is everything, Being a flag bearer or standard bearer are usually positives. Tone, inflection and body language, along with the rest of the conversation, must be taken into account.
We need more details. Was your convo along the lines of “Your responsibility is to wave the flag for diversity in the ad industry.” Or was it more along the lines of you saying a certain position would be best filled by a POC and your supervisor chimes in with a snarky tone “you’re waving the flag of diversity.” As a Hispanic-American, I sometimes say things I think mean one thing and they mean something else. It’s best you talk to your supervisor in private about what they meant.
Hell yes you are.
