You’re about to launch a new project in 90 days. As a Project Manager/Program Manager, what are some of the steps you take to prepare? What are some key items to do?

You can start setting up your processes and tools for managing the project (risk, issues, Comms, deliverable plan, etc), start pulling together the schedule, start working on staffing, do a stakeholder mapping, think about governance.

You know 90 days in advance?! Usually on Friday afternoon someone sends us an IM to say hey btw you’re starting a DD on retirement homes or garden sprinklers or some other weird widget, kickoff on Monday, get smart

Think about upcoming holidays and when said people on team and major stakeholders will definitely not be available. Review SOW in detail and look into the army that will help handle the project finances. Get a person or two from Legal on speed dial to discuss contracting questions if need be. Make a list of everything that needs to be done and everything you want to be done and set up specific time to have the relevant members of your team tackle each list. Budget team member development time and firm sponsor check-in time. Think about which tools you'll use to help you manage the project. Make sure there is room in the budget for asking for help/insights from other parts of the firm. Think about whether there are offshore implications and how that might affect team dynamics. Find your devil's advocates - a senior and junior member on your immediate team, a senior and junior member on the client team. Start throwing time on key team members' calendars for catchup and standup. Take the solution architect out for dinner. Think about days that will be internal team holidays (to do fun things) 😊

Great stuff thanks

Start to gather and sanitize templates (RAID log, project plans). Identify key stakeholders and start to map out their roles, emails, etc in a template to make it an easy copy/paste in the future. If there are folks you will be working with maybe reach out and introduce yourself via a quick “virtual coffee chat” to gather additional info and build relationships. One of your first decks will be a kick-off deck so start outlining.

like

Start identifying the resources that will be in named roles and start building your team one person at a time.

If only we had 90 days. Usually have negative days! But, I would most certainly stock up on liquor (since we can’t expense meals right now).

No input, but curious to see the various responses here.

Have a plan for every obstacle. Know your landscape well. Know the technical details of your project if it’s in tech. I can’t stress this enough for tech projects. Project managers who have minimal technical knowledge from building BS ppts absolutely suck!

I feel personally attacked

How do you set KPIs for your projects? How to choose the best KPIs among seemingly important KPIs in the beginning? Can you revise and change your KPIs along the way later?

Anyone regret going into data and analytics? Sometimes I feel like I'm too dumb for it. I don't have a statistics background to really take things to the next level, and my colleagues don't have the hours to help me. My technical skills are OK, but nothing to shout at, especially when I don't really have the interest to learn. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and steer my career to a boring client-side position instead.

Are there any “best practices” as it relates to giving notice? Currently practicing in somewhat of a specialist group and lateraling to re-tool to a practice area I’m more interested in and also relocating to LA (where I’m from), so not necessarily competitive but I’ve been in this group for 3 years and have received very positive feedback on my work and built solid relationships/mentorships so curious if y’all have any pointers to avoid inadvertently “burning bridges” as they say…

Just filed PERM! What is realistic timeline for getting GC end to end? Is this fair estimate:
- PERM approval - 6 months
- i140 doc prep/lawyer review - 2-3months
- i140 approval - 2 weeks
- i485 doc prep/review - 2-3 month
- AOS - 12 months

So maybe around 2 more years from now, assuming no RFE? I’m ROW and plan on filing i140/485 separately vs concurrent, apparently processing is delayed when concurrently filed. However, D lawfirm is super slow so kinda worried of extra delays in doc prep
