You’re in the process of taking a new position, waiting for an offer letter. At what point should you let them know the PTO you will need for the rest of the year? I had been planning to take the week of Thanksgiving and 4 days in early December. Do you ask for those days guaranteed at the offer/negotiation stage? Onboarding?

Do it when discussing start date. “I’m available to start as soon as November 15, but wanted to give a heads up that I have a pre-planned vacation November 22-26. Please let me know if you foresee any issues with that!” (They won’t, because the alternative is they hire someone else who starts even later).

Yep! I’d say any time off you need in the first 90 days should be mentioned during the start date conversation.

I usually mention any planned holidays when we discuss an offer so that it doesn’t come as surprise but I don’t draw to much attention to it, sort of just say it briefly

I’ve only worked at small places that don’t have hr though so if you’re at a bigger agency/company you could probably wait til onboarding

I’m going through the same thing. I’m negotiating PTO and will take the days I need - notifying them during the on boarding process. Typically I ask - what is the process for tracking PTO days, I’ll have some around the holidays.

I would let them know when returning my offer letter as well as my first meeting with my manager.

Thanks for the pin! And all the great replies.

I was asked very briefly about a possible start date in my final interview, when I was told they were going to move forward with me, but was a very brief discussion, and I haven’t had any other correspondence yet. So I imagine I will discuss it before/when I sign the final offer letter, since the time spent on negotiations will likely impact when I can start / my notice period at my current position anyways.

I usually go transparent with them that I have plans that I made before receiving this offer.

Absolutely tell them you have pro commitments that were made months ago and that you’ll need to take those days. They’ll probably adjust your salary since you haven’t earned those days. But you should get paid out for them at your current place so… it equals out.

I’ve definitely reached my limit for audit and I absolutely cannot stand it in this industry anymore.
