You’ve got a new gig and you’re hesitant to put in your two weeks for fear they’ll let you go on the spot because of the culture you’ve witnessed specific to leaving employees. What do you do?

Don’t give 2 weeks until you have an offer. Then if they tell you to leave try to rejuvenate yourself in the gap.

Definitely won’t give two weeks until that letter is signed.

Prepare for that scenario. And don’t sweat it. Get your personal stuff out discreetly before. If you have any personal files or work you want copies of, or phone numbers of future contacts there, etc, gather that on the down low now. Pretty much be ready so if that happens you just smile. Say fine. Wish them well. And walk on out, head held high. Time to rejuvenate before your new gig.

Also, two weeks isn’t a mandatory law. It’s just become a nice common practice. However, if you’re in a environment that will take that nicety and shit all over it, then by all means, no need to give it. You can quit on the spot.

Get all the files you need before you hand in your two weeks. Then, in the crazy scenario where they let you go – you’d probably get severance. Which is why they won’t do it, and why it would be awesome if they did.

Two extra weeks of vacation? Woooo! But also be sure you have savings if needed for that time. As others have said get ALL your work out ASAP and discreetly. Get all your expenses in and approved! Especially if it’s on a personal card.

As said above, be ready to walk out if they fire you. Your slap back will be when they say you can get your stuff later and you say, “nah, I’m a lol set, I knew you were going to do this.” And if you are short on cash, just do this one week before starting new gig. Tell them you thought about 2 weeks but seeing as they seemed in the past to not want people staying once notice was given you planned for that eventuality.

Also, dying to know what agency This is. Feel free to toss it up after you hand that slip in

Will follow up with you!

(I don’t have the gig yet, but I am preparing for an offer.)

Don’t give two weeks. Tell them the Friday before the Monday you start the new gig.

If you fear they’ll let you go on the spot, it’s already sour.

In addition to all of the excellent above advice get people’s contact info. If they are as nasty as you say, if you want to hit back a little extra. then take any trend reports and research they fund as well. The most important is work and personal items you can’t get by without. Since you’re a strat it also makes sense to also get files of any relevant creative work (as long as you actually contributed to it.) And if they walk you I know it feels weird and abrupt. But enjoy it. Take some time off. Also if $ is an issue there is a chance your new place will take you earlier if you tell them you are free.

Give a week

If they let you go on the spot you get free time off & they’ll probably still pay you for said free time.

You're better off being fired. Collect severance and two weeks unemployment.

Make sure your finances are in order. At some places if you start in the middle of the pay period, payroll will make you wait until the next pay period before you get your first check. And then sometimes it’s mailed as a paper check. This happened to be before and had all sorts of bills late.

Save all of the things, clean up your desk, give your two weeks and hope they tell you not to come back. I negotiated a week off between offers; my old agency asked me to leave the following Monday, and I was gifted with 3 weeks vacation, 2 of which were paid. You'll be fine. Just back up your files in advance. Seriously.

What they all said. Resign on pay day also so you get your full amount and hope they let you walk out the door that day and enjoy your two week vacation

Assume you’re at anomaly. Just put your notice in, think about the new place (congratulations) and stop caring about your current one. If you have friends here, they’ll stay in touch. If your client likes you, ask for a LinkedIn reference. But don’t look back, you’re going forwards.

I wish I was at Anomaly; it would be a dream compared to where I am.
