Yes adapting right now and it is quite challenging

It can be a function of multiple things - ability to gel with the ZS culture, quick turnaround for most activities, fractional staffing etc. A flat hierarchy means that you have the power but also the responsibility to navigate your own path with complete accountability and ownership. Most of these are common to the industry itself (consulting), but essentially it comes down to performing at a high level on a regular basis. I can describe this in one sentence - every day is like your first day. You have to earn your place in the firm. The compensation is quite decent but this comes with responsibility and plenty of sacrifice. The best part is the collaboration level in the firm. There is no competition among people at same level. You are only competing with yourself and trying to get to a better version of yourself with every review cycle (twice per year). My 2 years have been the most challenging but the most rewarding of my career.

2 yr Manager here. Lateral hire. Yes, adapting to ZS style can be extremely tough. It depends on the industry you are coming from but generally it is not an easy ride.

It was so overwhelming for me that i started having imposter syndrome. It was my team and manager who made it easy for me. Only thing I regret is why I couldnt join early but if you always keep open mind, it gets easier.

Yes it is more, if someone switched from service based company and your home grown immediate senior is too particular about everything.
P.S: I have already resigned

Understanding the way ZS approaches problems and presents a solution was difficult for me to grasp because everyone here is so smart and critical; I had never thought about things like that before. That was the hardest part because you felt like you weren’t getting it.

like

Yepp it is not easy, but then it can not be easy too. Every big organisation has its own way of working. Joining at a higher level from another firm always gets difficult. I joined ZS as AC level after 4 yrs of experience and it took some time to adjust here. If you are coming from similiar industry then i would suggest to lead the same team as you are doing in your current organisation.

What is it about ZS style that makes transitions difficult?

The culture is good. Very collegial. Though with partners it can be more formal than at ZS (if you care about that). Below partner level though it’s casual, like ZS. The people at LEK are great.

LEK isn’t for everyone though. It’s not the culture that’s challenging; it’s the WLB. You have to want to do more challenging work to enjoy it (or want more comp).

There are lots of nice people at both places. I am only a data point of n=1, so take with a grain of salt, but I’ve actually seen more toxic behavior at ZS than at LEK. Spent 2 years at both.

But why would you want to switch from strategy& to ZS?

like

S& pays a lot more. At least at the post-MBA level

True for any firm, honestly!

It’s pretty rough. Folks in here mostly accurate. I think the key to success is spending first 6 months listening and learning the ways of the “locals” vs immediately trying to add new value. Take the pressure off, approach it with an open mind. There is an expectation to deliver a certain way and it takes a little practice.

Yes came in as a C, and learning to adjust

We have talked about wanting to get married eventually and have kids, we know which cities we might want to move to etc. We’ve been together for 6 years, and I know he wants to wait awhile before getting married. Hi! Looking for advice on a possible move from LS Consulting to in house. There’s some considerations: I’m a registered lobbyist (so I consult and directly lobby), do not have a JD, have 2.5 years experience working in Big Law as a non lawyer lobbyist, and am looking at a range of companies (Pfizer, Genentech, Regeneron). I work with many of these guys and have been reached out to - I’m trying to figure pay range for a lobbying position in house at pharma companies. Glassdoor is unhelpful so far
