Be patient and keep interviewing and grow your network. You cannot just snap your fingers and jump into that type of job.
I went into Internal Audit and its been roughly 40 hour weeks for the past 10 years for me. WLB is amazing. Sure I can make more elsewhere, but I'm not at the bottom of the range. I have 2 little kids and cherish all the time and moment I get to spend with them.
Because you make more than 90% of the population likely and your earning potential is very high
Partner 1-#Truth
I've been told "40 hours" twice and it never panned out. I went to the IRS and pretty solid 40 only.
IRS pay is not much different, but the perks are higher and job stability is greater. This is actually a part of the problem with our nation economically. Government as the largest employer and largest welfare provider means double the tax burden on a shrinking private sector that tends not to qualify for Bezos and Musk subsidies, socialize their losses onto the taxpayer, and pocket profits, but are asked to pay wages and taxes as if they were Bezos and Musk. Meanwhile, the government collaborates with Bezos and Musk shielding them from viable competitive forces and the cost of government is too burdensome.
No matter what field you’re in, if you want to be relevant, do meaningful work & get paid well for it, there are no 40 hour work weeks. The 40 hour week is for the minimum wage & factory working crowd. That’s not to disparage minimum wage & factory workers. And if 40 hour work weeks is what’s most important to you, that’s where you need to be. But you have to accept you will never make the kind of money that will get you ahead in the world.

Yep, must be a partner. And to get to that point, there was definitely many years of getting used and abused for low pay

Get out of public accounting. There's plenty in private industry
This is true for most US employers. Us culture is to overwork and underpay in general.
Right
Where you located? Let me know if you want a referral to MA. As a senior I’m taking home $1500 paychecks at 24/hr week (95k/year at 1.0 FTE). It’s glorious. We even have SMs on a 0.60 FTE schedule.
I actually work for Deloitte on FWA and I’ve had no issues.
The grass is greener in industry. Slower wage growth but excellent WLB and you still make a very comfortable living!
Join the government. I did and I will stay here until the day I retire.
IRS LB&I
I obtained my MBA, focused in accounting. Worked a little over a year and realized the same. Move over to audit. I work 37.5 hour weekly.
It doesn’t matter your field, if you are in any kind of work (engineering, law, accounting) where you are billing your time which is the revenue driver for the company, you will work a lot.
On the flip side, you have more job security than others. I will take job security over the promise of some mystical thing called “work life balance”
I’m not sure there is a 40 hour week anywhere anymore, sadly!
YYes there is. It is called temping. Public accounting abuses its employees until you get to the Partner level. Then all the years of abuse pay off (hopefully).
Even in private accounting I have worked 60+ hour weeks. But if you temp you get over time! I doubled my paycheck in one week with the overtime I made when I was doing a fixed asset implementation in NetSuite. Don't get me wrong, you can get 40 hour a week jobs in private but you really don't know what you are walking into when you accept a job offer in private. At least when you temp and they make you work late they also have to pay a big bill for your OT at the end of the month. That will make them think twice for making you work past 8 hours in a day.
You are correct..10hr work week here. Private company management with zero accounting skills and I automated everything when I got here.
To ruin your end of the year holiday? 🤣 jk.
