Partners are not leading diligence exercises. They have end-to-end M&A lifecycle ownership of a relationship/set of relationships. They are typically the final escalation point on engagement delivery.
This. I’ll get involved in scope planning, client alignments, and delivery of final reports to the CFO (in the case of a FDD for example). If I’m on a PMI project, I’ll be probably 1-2 days a week allocated for a really large integration / separation where we have 15-20 resources, and if it’s a small team I’d probably just be 1-2h a week of QA with the team.
Are there even M&A partners? Or would they be partners that specialize in the industry that the M&A is happening in?
I’m an M&A partner. Some are specialized (eg focused on FDD within a specific industry sector), others are more generalist (eg PMI). I moved from valuation / finance transformation work into PMI and love it.

Partners sell and sign-off work. If your name is on the front page along with the company logo, the quality of work = your personale reputation. Hence, you need to be involved to a appropriately to sign-off and rely on Directors/Senior Managers to run the day—2-day.
