What to expect at a lateral interview with partners? First one ever and am at the partner interview stage

They tell you about their practice, you tell them why you wanna lateral, you ask five mins of insightful questions at the end.

Three things: your story, why you want to move (both why you want to leave and why you want to join them), and your experience. The first two are probably gating issues, and the third one is probably the most important for the hiring decision.

And be prepared to ask 15 mins of questions. Some partners are will give you a lot of time.

When I did this, I brought one of my best non-confidential (publicly filed) work product and even an outstanding deposition transcript I took (best excerpts). As. I left I said something along the lines of — I’ll leave you with these if you want to take a look. I did get hired. But this is not the best course of action for everyone. Worked for me though many years ago.

Be prepared to answer questions about any matters you specifically referenced on your CV. Have some stories about each one highlighting problems you identified and solved, focus on your contribution. Be nice/yourself because they are also testing your “fit” and probably don’t want to hire a robot.

How many rounds of interviews are there typically in a big/midlaw lateral hiring process?

Usually 2 (screener, then four interviews) but sometimes 3 and sometimes 1 (for very hot areas).
