What year did you gain INDEPENDENCE to run LARGE cases?
I’m a 4th year and my partner let’s me run smaller cases but still not letting me run the largest cases in the firm, but I’m not sure when I should be running independent

What size firm? Practice area? Geo area?

"Biggest cases in the firm" in big law aren't going to a mid level...

Low am 100. Product liability so very large cases, but I keep hearing “I’m not independently running large cases yet” in my review and I’m wondering if I should be because no 4th years in my group are but if not why does this keep coming up

This is exactly what I was looking for in like are we finding things to complain about or am I under performing. It sounds like it’s them...not me. Also your friend is a legend.

I have heard variations of this line before being given in reviews (once, amazingly, to me as a second year, but also friends have gotten it). I agree it’s an excuse to not promote you, either in the future or down the road. But also remember that at many firms you’ll only get what you take, so you need to push aggressively for responsibility or else the partners will be all to happy to let you do midlevel stuff for a few years and then push you out once the partnership question starts coming around.

I work at a ‘free market’ firm and have developed a very good reputation among partners. Naturally, they are drowning me in work. Each time a new case comes up, the partner will email asking if I have “time and interest” in helping. When I’m at capacity, I take these words at face value and explain why I can’t do it, and that seems to work out ok with no hard feelings. But what’s the “interest” thing? If I don’t want to work on a toxic tort case, do I just say that and pass?

But now, one partner has become super mad and when I explained ADD, he said:
