I'd rather have questions at the end even if its scripted because that shows that you were prepared. Also this extends the interview because the timer has not stopped yet.
I think it's okay for it to be a little bit scripted. The whole interviewing process is awkward and vaguely scripted. Just ask your questions and try to be as natural as possible without overthinking it too much.
I always ask questions at the end of an interview. I don't think it sounds scripted if you are being genuine and asking good questions. Remember, you are interviewing the to see if the role is a good fit for you as well.
Questions feel on point when they connect directly to the role, team, and real challenges, not just generic ones. When candidates ask about priorities, success metrics, or current problems, it shows they truly understand the work.
