The Kia Sorento (and I own Audi SUVs) had me super pleasantly surprised! Great warranty and really nicely equipped. I had gotten it as a rental car for a few days.
Thank you this is helpful! Might have to see the space in person. We’re relatively small people in our family but I still need something that can last me hours. We’ve taken 12 hour road trips and if it’s not comfy enough for that then I don’t want it haha!

Hyundai Kona EV, saves you gas money and should fit your budget with incentives
I recommend a used Volvo SUV or Jeep SUV. Can find low mileage in that range.
If you want a good mid sized suv I recommend the Toyota Highlander. A used one may be a little over 20k but it will be a car that will last you a very long time. They have high resale values, and for a good reason.
I love my 2016 Honda CR-V (AWD). My aunt liked it so much she went out and got the 2020. Cousin wanted to one-up and got the 2022. My dad is 6’5” and drives mine when he needs to save on gas and he isn’t overly cramped. It’s not great for him on long drives, but less than an hour? Does the job.

Hyundai Tucson. Not the best gas mileage but smooth ride and solid tech for the price.
Subaru accent. Lasts a long time and decent pricing used. The outback is also good too. But there are others like the Kia Sorento, Volkswagen Tiguan etc.
You are going to need to stretch your budget. Any SUV 2019 or later is going to be $30k plus.
My wife is getting constant emails about her 2018 Mazda CX-5 where dealer is offering $30k to purchase it - more than she actually paid for it.
A used Telluride goes for like $45-50k
Toyota Rav4. A little higher than your budget, but it'll last you for 10+ years with basic maintenance.
Is there a particular reason you're looking for later than 2019? You could save some money buying something a bit older that still has life left.

Used Honda HRV, Subraru Crosstrek, and Toyota Venza will probably meet your needs and ~20k budget. Used car prices are still a little high (but trending down), so these might go at a premium to above 20k.
Any particular need for SUV? Sedans will probably be cheaper and are more fuel efficient.
I don’t know.. Buying SUV seems to be the norm when you have kids 😀 please change my mind..
How big of an SUV?
For a smaller 3 row SUV - Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, or Jeep Grand Cherokee L
For a true large SUV - Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition, or Yukon Denali.
I’m personally in the market for a large SUV and I’m holding out for the 2023 Toyota Sequoia Capstone with hybrid engine
Makes sense! The reason I’m looking at the Sequoia is that it should be $15k cheaper than a Yukon Denali and it’ll have a monster hybrid engine along with Toyota reliability.
So in that sense I think it’s a value relative to other options in the class. That being said it’s still going to be $70k for the trim we are looking at so value is all relative.
