Don’t be a schmuck, go to Georgia Tech. Top 10 school for that and it will only cost you $10k compared to 70k and up from the ivy douchebags for information that’s all freely online anyways. Your ROI will be significantly higher.

Depends on what your goals are. If the goal is to break into analytics, you don’t need a specific masters for that; take enough online learning (LinkedIn, Udemy, or DataCamp usually best options; Coursera can also be good) and you’ll be prepped enough to answer most questions. Nothing beats on-the-job training in the end.
Analytics is so broad that some roles only require SQL, some only require Excel, some require heavy stats, some require understanding basic data science, some are a hybrid of analyst and something else like data engineer or data scientist or other. Certs in a tool like Tableau might be more helpful in certain cases.

I recommend mastering in data science not data analytics because data analytics you can learn on the job.

A lot depends on what the individual is looking to do. Within my masters program, I’ve met people who were there to boost resumes, some who were there for learning, and some close to retirement who is there for fun.

The ones who were there to boost resumes and not contribute to group work is clear. The thing about such programs is: your new opportunity usually comes from your network… if you’re antagonizing your group members at school, you’re not getting any recommendations to join a new company or industry.

Udemy & YouTube.

You don't need a masters for analytics like you need a PhD in data science.

like

PhD in anything, they’re required to take advanced statistical methods courses

Stanford
MIT
Harvard

Get a starting job by using Udemy or similar online resources and then have them pay for your advanced degree while working.

MIT Business Analytics is extremely strong; graduates have exited to PhD level roles and some required curriculum is PhD level. It’s called business analytics but it’s MITs flagship data science program.

Best programs for outcomes and learning are likely MIT, Stanford MS&E, and Harvard DS.

If you (1) want the check mark that comes with an advanced degree- especially one universally recognized, (2) you’re lucky enough to have a company that supports your program financially, and (3) can balance it while working full time, then I’d highly recommend it. You get a lot of out thinking about the problems from an academic setting where you’ve dedicated the time and resources to be there/ commit to actually learn the material vs. quick wins online (not always the case but I think of it as an online workout class vs. attending a class). Plus you get additional benefits from professors and peers who have unique perspectives when approaching the materials that will help you more long term professionally. And of course there’s networking opportunities but don’t go in thinking it’s an MBA program.

Most big schools/ city programs have pretty good programs, but there is a lot of variety between programs when you bring in anything even hinting at “data”.

I'm getting mine at UChicago. It's called MSCA

I’ve had several friends do the uva data analytics masters and loved it.

I did mine in Carnegie Mellon.

I think I would have enjoyed it in any school, though. That’s how much I like that kind of work. I did it because I enjoyed it. It was fun!

I looked into MIT’s program, George Washington, and Georgia tech too. I intentionally looked for programs who made us code in R AND python. Hard to find the python part, so a school with good computer science program is going to help you with that…. Pair that with a good MBA program, and you have a good business analytics program that is skewed towards production-oriented analytics.

I think MIT would have been a good alternative if I wanted to do it elsewhere, but I really didn’t do it for the school brand. Made a lot of friends, had a lot of fun. Imagine being surrounded by folks who are doing it because they enjoy the same thing as you! :)

I’m not actively looking, but it’s nice to know I made the right call: big tech recruiters are calling me now. Carnegie is a target school for tech, if you want consulting, go to the Ivies, imo.
