Totally worth it. The longer you work in a creative field the more you realize that creative agencies justify paying you less because you work a "cool job." But being in a cool field doesn't pay the bills. I'd totally move into the healthcare space if it meant a significant pay increase.
Thank you appreciate this insight!! Very true
That's a nice increase, so it's something to take seriously. One way to think about it is to project how things may play out down the road. If you think the move sets you up better for a long-term career, that's meaningful. Or, if you think you'd be better off in the future by not pivoting, perhaps foregoing the money now would make sense. That shapes up as a big gamble, of course.
I think I’d be better off financially 100% but the work is not exciting whatsoever. It’s a trade off between fun CPG work and boring health stuff that pays the bills and upgrades my life. Just don’t want it to make me miserable
I did this exact thing 5 years ago, went from AD making 75K to Sr AD in pharma making 115K. I’m now an ACD in pharma.
Happy to chat in DMs if you want some long form advice.
Ohhhh. Basically almost my situation. I’m going to hit you up!!
The money does start to come in for traditional advertising creatives a little bit later than those in health care, but once I was senior (6 years in) I started making 6 figures.
If you don’t want to work on main stream advertising again without a massive battle to prove yourself, go for it. I wouldn’t recommend this for someone early in their career unless that’s the path they want to go down for the rest of their career.
I’m saying I personally made that 6 years in as a traditional advertising creative. Different for everyone though lots of factors at play when it comes to salary.
I would take that jump. But I tend to like money more than a lot of people in this industry. Lol. I do art and design on the side for my soul, but my job needs to bring in the cash.
