I remember treating teachers and principals with respect and if you got into any trouble at school. You’d have a hot seat after you got home!!!
Pro
No violence whatsoever in any capacity. I also remember walking home for lunch in elementary school lol. Kindergarten was totally play based and was half a day. It was a different world it seems.
The purplish ink on the worksheets and they way they smelled coming off the mimeograph machine!
And it was cold. I loved that.
Chalkboards. Half day kindergarten. Learning "the basics" in kindergarten. No computers. Treating teachers with respect. The projector. Library check-out cards with stamped due dates! Having a principal that students respected but had a healthy fear of. Having 3 recesses a day. No violence. Bus drivers that kept the students in line. Parents who truly cared about their children's education. When kid did something wrong, they believed adults over their children. Writing MULTIPLE sentences when you did something wrong.
Geez, I *REALLY* miss those days!! Thanks for the memory walk. ♥️
Def no fear of principal these days!
The big TV with the straps on the cart for movie days! Blow pops and tootsie rolls given out at school
School starting with prayer and the pledge of allegiance - and no one complained that we started that way!
The people who had an issue with the prayer were too afraid to say anything.
I’m originally from Philadelphia, school started at 9am to 3pm. Kindergartners took afternoon naps on a cot. Parents in the neighborhood took turns gathering all of the kids that went to Elementary School and walked us to school, which wasn’t far. We had crossing guards on every corner going to school and coming home.
1. Mr. Clarks weekend VIP trip to the lake with a sail boat, house boat, and jet ski.
2. Mr. Wing’s Costco bag of peanut or jolly ranchers for social studies review.
3. Taking home the class turtle and rat for the weekend.
4. Citations for using foul language.
5. Lunch food cooked in the cafeteria.
I remember film strips and in 8th grade my male classmates would tell, “STRIP FILM!”

The teacher with the greenish blue hair was funny. The handouts were kind of hard to read since they got grainier over time on the mimeograph. It was a job to bang the erasers to get the chalk out. We would spend an entire class period programming the computer in the computer lab using BASIC to make a ball bounce around the screen.
Ditto machines
Card catalog in the library and slide shows. Not Google, little pictures that when you clicked a button it spun to the next picture.
The cafeteria food looked and tasted so much better. We had awesome salad bars, fresh baked goods, and vending machines with a ton of options. On special occasions, we had a bit of fast food, like Taco Bell soft tacos or Dominos Pizza slices. It coast extra, but was worth it!
We used to have to rely on books and chalkboards. Now, they have access to computers, tablets, and interactive whiteboards. They have it better in terms of academics. But the the environment has gotten more toxic imo.
