I’m a fourth year in Big Law. I’ve been billing 2000+ hours annually since I started with the firm (first as a student and now as an associate). Over the last two years, my husband and I have been through infertility/IVF hell. A few partners I am very close to know that I am going through IVF. Last week I found out I am pregnant for the first time through IVF. I will be 5 weeks on Tuesday and already feeling fatigue and nausea. Should I tell the partners I am close to? (More in comments)

Disclose early. You can ask about reasonable accommodation through the pregnancy workers fairness act.

Hey, best wishes! I would say if you're close to these partners and they know you're doing IVF, then if they notice you're a bit burnt out and not performing at the same level they will likely just assume you got pregnant. I mean we're attorneys we are supposed to be smart so they likely will figure it out or at least consider it as a possibility. So if you're not ready to share you don't have to. But if you feel like it will be a relief for you, then go ahead. It's not "too early" and every pregnancy deserves to be known and celebrated and acknowledged.

I am feeling so burnt out already. And billed 200+ hours the last few months. I don’t want a formal leave but I don’t want to continue at the pace I’ve been going. What should I do? Disclose early or wait?

I was in similar situation and disclosed early, only regret was not dosclosing even earlier than I did (both IVF and actual pregnancy).

Disclosed at week 12 and that was perfect. Early but also I was comfortable sharing at that time. I would be wary of disclosing too early as partners are not always looking out for your best interests but only you know how much you can trust them

I just had a baby in March. I disclosed my pregnancy to HR and close partners quite early and didn’t see much downside in doing so. Ultimately, if something happened to my pregnancy, I was going to have to tell them anyways, so I didn’t see why I wouldn’t tell them.

Telling them didn’t really help with my workload though. I was also working 200+ hours and no one cared until I explicitly said it was too much and asked for things to be taken off my plate. So, be prepared to vocalize your concerns and don’t just expect people to have your back.

If you’re in NY or CA, look into applying for short term disability at 36 weeks. I’m in NY and it was fully paid and super easy—my doctor was happy to sign the paperwork for me, and I was so happy to finish work up early.

I disclosed around 8-10 weeks because I was sick and needed an accommodation to work remotely. I also scaled back my workload during pregnancy to decrease stress and make sure I was taking care of myself. Congrats!!

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.

Considering a change from audit (SM) to an advisory role - looking at a Director position within Strategy, Finance and Accounting M&A. [Insert typical “should I make the jump” question here]. I’m 3+ years to audit partner and weighing options and exhausted by omnipresent inspection risk and how this impacts day to day (and presume it will continue to get worse). Considering the advisory role 1) job security, 2) exit ops, 3) partnership ops. Anyone recently make a similar jump and could share?
