This is actually really common right now.
A lot of account roles already include project management responsibilities, but the challenge is when you try to pivot — titles start to matter more than the work you’ve been doing.
You’re now competing with candidates who already have “PM” in their title, even if your experience overlaps.
Also something to consider — PM roles tend to be more structured internally, while account roles often have more visibility and faster promotion paths.
You might find it easier to pivot on the client side where PM work is tied more directly to business outcomes vs just execution.
I actually just talked about how the market is shifting (especially with remote roles and competition), because it’s not as straightforward as it used to be.
Thank you for your insight! I'll definitely explore PM roles on the client side as well.
I notice that it's difficult to jump to the client side as an account person - would you say it's equally challenging for PM roles too?
Honestly, I changed my title on my resume when I had hybrid roles. I wrote project manager (account services) because I was also a PM.
thank you for this tip!
