Used to live in Chicago so I've gone from there to the West Coast and to the East Coast overnight a few times via Amtrak. Would recommend getting the roomette for the free meals and being able to stretch out at night. Remember to put your feet in the direction of travel when sleeping too!

I've done west from chicago. You want the best room you can afford. Bring a book, games, and snacks. Be prepared to be late and enjoy the scenery. Don't count on wifi the whole way. Once I did one that let me stop in glacier National Park at the lodge. The station is right there. Spent two days at glacier and the continued onto Seattle.
