I’ve learned that very often there’s a lot of wasted hours in consulting going towards perfecting a powerpoint only for some OCD manager, no other reason
It is such a waste of time. I always push on people for quality so that it doesn’t distract from the message (e.g., typos, horribly misaligned boxes) but some people focus too much on this should be a different shape or some crazy graphic. Often a basic table / text box is more than adequate.
There's an old saying about how putting lipstick on a pig doesn't change anything. But if you make a gorgeous PowerPoint you might be able to dress things up enough to really impress people. They may not seem to pay attention, but that's fine, they're also not getting agitated.
It’s all about the storytelling and how you frame the message in a clear way that the audience actually cares about, not just pumping out a bunch of content. The right graphics can help but sometimes it can go too far that it distracts or feels like flash without enough substance.
This does actually feel like a true statement. It feels like there is always so much analysis and slides put together and it all comes down to a handful of them and the rest is just fluff for an appendix. You kind of have to do all that work to land on the couple money slides.
