Do you think respect should be freely given or does it have to be earned? I’m of the opinion that it should be given and then only withheld if for good reason. But at the heart of things, everyone deserves respect at least at the beginning.

I think a baseline of common courtesy should be given freely. That’s just basic human decency. But true respect, the kind that sticks and means something, has to be earned over time through actions, trust, and integrity. Giving respect upfront is a good start, but it’s what people do after that really counts.

I don't disagree with any of that. I think that there are just different levels of respect. If I'm meeting someone for the first time I'm naturally respectful, and they'd have to do something to get me to treat them less than respectfully. But real respect is something that's earned over time. There are people you work with who may be impressive in some ways, and they can win enduring respect.

Yes totally agree with this. Earned respect is a different level to the usual respect I would give.

I'm of the same mind as you. I give people respect and the benefit of the doubt until they've given me a reason not to. It's so much easier to go through life assuming people are decent and worthy of that respect than to view everyone with suspicion.

Common decency and basic respect should be given to all living things.

I totally agree that respect should always be given just as being a decent human being, but I feel like respect goes to a deeper level after being ‘earned’ as well

An agency I freelance for wants to hire me full-time. They told me for a Sr Copywriter, 100-110k. I countered with 125-150.

I also said I'm interested in a higher-level title - I currently freelance as a Creative Director of Copy elsewhere (they don't have that title at this agency.)

They came back and said yes to the title and to 125, with a 6 month review that could raise it to 145.

Which is good for Sr Copy, but low for CD/ACD level. Don't want to screw myself over. What to say now?
