I actually totally think regular (non ad) people care about advertising. Think about the superbowl ad discourse? People are always raving about their favorite commercials and it feels like it draws as much attention as the game sometimes. I definitely think that people are impressed by good advertising

No one *inside* the advertising world seems to care about ad quality…
Our industry hates jingles and puns. Real people love them. But you don't win a Lion with them and you can't convince yourself you're an 'artist'.
Rising Star
Yes. There’s a reason the general public looks forward to seeing the ads that run during the Super Bowl. Too bad clients don’t treat every opportunity like the Super Bowl.
Rising Star
Yup. No question. But there are at least a couple each year that are book-worthy. And people still look forward to seeing the spots
Always been impressed at how fast people reach a conclusion about an ad - good, bad, great, indifferent. And yeah, big part of that is quality—manifested as interesting, unique, relevantly different. It’s not a formula: it’s what gets and holds attention.
They do care, even if sub-consciously.
I recommend the Book of Gossage.
Yes they definitely do care.. because everyone has opinions. My family used to rate Super Bowl commercials before I ever studied it in school. Now they just make sure to share their faves with me lmao
There have been times that I have thought the same thing but just today I saw an ad for a McCrispy that was placed near a crematory and people were very upset about it. I think that goes to show you that yes it does matter because a bad ad will really upset people.
People may not tell you they care, but they show it in unmistakable ways—how they dole out their precious attention. We’ve not only cheapened ourselves and our clients by denigrating the importance of “quality” in competitive marketplaces (and aren’t they all?); we’ve totally lost the plot.

What jumps off the screen is that “quality” — if you define it as a combination of idea, craft/execution, and context — is more important than ever.
