What will hurt your portfolio more? Which do you believe in more, the in house brand or pharmaceutical brand?
Depends what you mean by in-house. If it’s at a start-up like Dollar Shave Club, AWAY or Brookline’s, or a tech company like Facebook, Google, Squarespace or Spotify then it will probably help your career.
How will in-house hurt your career?
The same way pharma can, in that many recruiters and even some CDs will pull something like “we’re looking for someone with more agency experience” out of their asses.
I hope 2020 is a wake up call to this kind of gatekeeping, but the hype for “side hustles” and pharma itself requiring juniors to be experienced in pharma-related specifics has me somewhat pessimistic. With that said, I don’t think any sort of career pivoting will suddenly become impossible.
False choice.
Neither, both can hurt or help. I don't think algos screen out for either. Some in house shops do exceptional work. Pharma has some if the most intricate, multi-audience initiatives with frequent brand launches.
In terms of long-term, specifically, either is better than "regular" agencies.
Have you seen the ageism storm that erupted at WPP? See Forbes, AdAweek, and, in particular, George Tannenbaum's blog, AdAged and his LinkedIn feed. He shares that 75% of WPP employees are younger than 40. Not a good long-term play.
Yes, realize this - VMLY&R is putting energy behind new offering VMLY&Rx.
Is a relatively, healthy corner of the industry.
IMO
- healthcare benefits from deep category expertise that comes with experience.
- I suspect, the age picture skews older at healthcare shops, including WPP's
in house if you want to transition back to agency side

Agree with the above. If it’s a more high profile or flashy start up, I think in house would be my choice
