My district, (I retired a couple years ago) is unique…I taught in a large district that was completely walking. Yep, no morning, afternoon or Kindergarten bus. We had two busses for field trips and contracted out for larger groups that traveled. With that said, many parents opt to drive their kids to school. Our superintendent hardly ever calls for a snow day or delays of any kind. In the few instances when he does call off, parents get angry because he waits until the last minute. I get angry because I’ve usually just gotten to the building. It’s annoying and inconsiderate for supers to not consider arrangements others have to make.

Parents are fussing and saying all kinds of things here. Some body is telling them to reach out to the IDOE and file a complaint.
I think this is normal. I grew up in NJ and remember waking up to listen to the radio to see if our school number was called for a closing. Now, working in NW Indiana, it is super rare to get a call the night before. This is my 7th year in the district and I can think of very few times that we called the night before, one was during the polar vortex and another for a major snowstorm. Where I live, the lake effect snow can be very unpredictable, I have seen the forecast call for 4-6 inches but we wake up to barely an inch. If we had called it ahead of time, there would have been no reason to keep the kids home. Both my district and my kids' district make the call by 5:15 so most of the time, I know by the time my alarm is going off.

Oh, how I remember sitting and waiting for our county to show up as the counties scrolled by. Our county starts with a V, so the wait always seemed to take forever
The call for us is usually made by 5:30 am and parents are notified at that time. Once in a great while the call is made the night before, usually when it’s the second day and the weather still makes driving dangerous.

Honestly, if I had a student who had to walk or ride the bus, I would probably just keep them home.

Ugh I feel for parents in your district! My husband was talking the other month about how lucky I am to get snow days called the night before and getting a text, not having to wait for my school to scroll across the news on the bottom. We don’t have kids so he doesn’t really interact with children or parents very often so I explained how stressful finding childcare last minute while also dealing with snow at your house and needing to get to work. Men am I right??? Upon second thought he realized how awful it’s gotta be to find out the morning of My home district called one so late last month kids were out waiting for the bus and bus drivers actually arrived at the bus garage for work before it got called. I felt awful for parents on my street!! It was stressful and a few had already left for work thinking their kid would get on the bus in the next 10-15 minutes. A freaking mess!!!

That is awful. The inconvenience is just not fair. Everyone suffers the impact of that situation!
