I am starting a medical leave and wonder if it’s a one way door? Is there a chance I can return and pick up where I left, or is it out of sight out of mind? With job market as bad as it is - I am nervous…

I went out on medical leave last year for an unavoidable procedure due to a chronic health issue.

I started planning six months out to be sure I could front load my projects and load my pipeline up for my return.

I worked my physician to get a sense of what I could do post-surgery so that rather than writing my STD request for a full absence for X weeks, I could have a staggered return. Mine looked like “full absence for 2 weeks, able to return to part-time light duty of 5-20 hours a week depending on progress (no driving, sitting for more than 1 hour, and no more than 4 hours in one day) for the next 6 weeks, and intermittent leave as needed for the following 2 months”

What I then did was use that part-time return to make sure I was in the mix attending important internal calls, staying on top of proposals and pursuits, and not being overlooked for RFP teams or larger opportunities. I worked hard to stay connected to my fellow partners, particularly those who are generally collaborative.

I still took a hit in sales/utilization where both dipped considerably in that quarter but they steadily climbed back to my prior level.

Thank you, this is very helpful.

You should prepare for this being career limiting. This of course is contrary to any official HR policy, but unofficially it has the potential of hurting you depending on the senior leadership culture. So, I would be diligent in keeping notes and cautious in your communication. If you are able, I would get legal advice prior so you are prepared for the worst. Also, remember always that HR is not there to help you. They are there to protect your employer no matter what level you are.

Noted! Thank you. I will seek legal advice

What do you mean by medical leave? One week? One month? More? What are the reasons? Burn-out?
