I feel underqualified as a 'senior product manager'. I feel like I just stumbled onto this title as our company changed the titles from product owner to product manager. Now I have this title at a FAANG type company (IT team which is just setting up their product management team) and I don't think I should be here. Won't be able to do as well as the other (principal) product manager they hired 4 months ago who is a rockstar. I am literally hyperventilating right now and it's day 3! 😥

Sounds like you need to reframe this! If you're underqualified, that just gives you something to focus on and try to achieve in your first year or so at the job, you have a purpose! There is no "supposed to" we end up where we end up and it isn't all up to us, so you might as well try! The principal PM isn't your competition, just someone for you to observe and work with, which will only improve your own skills. You're working with someone who knows what they're doing, which will only help you! You got this.

There are times in life where you “ignore how you feel” and just do…

It’s simply the matter of exposure and with enough exposure anyone can seem like a rockstar. You just have to put feelings of anxiety and imposter syndrome aside and conquer each day and absorb as much as you can from folks who have been product managing for a while. One day you won’t even realize it and you will be the rockstar. I have felt like this at every new job and every new step in life. Once you push through the suck there are always rewards waiting in the end. This is how you grow, separate yourself from everyone else and add more knowledge/wisdom under your belt.

Thank you for the reassurance. Even though anonymous, you are my pillars of support through a challenging personal time along with the new job. Hugs and gratitude to this school of fishes!

Not in the PM world, but in marketing I started at a new company and another coworker had started 3 weeks before me. At first I got bad vibes from her and she was very stand-off ish from me. One afternoon about 2 weeks in she came over when the office was cleared out and told me this was her first position in a marketing dept (she had 8 years in various content/writing roles) and felt like she didn’t know enough and asked for my help and guidance as she got up to speed. Of course I said yes and made sure to help breakdown things that has become 2nd nature to me. She is not the sr. content and design manager.

All that to say, go ask the principle PM to help. Be vulnerable that you don’t know everything, but you want to learn.

Just the fact that you’re asking the question this way means you have all the groundwork for a great product manager: humility and curiosity!
Your job will be to stay this way as you build experience. Yes, you will likely get faster at things, but the product manager is always creating the new and exploring the next frontier of the product, so get used to the feeling 👍

Second advice would be to build a reading habit! There’s loads of great stuff out there, maybe we can start another thread on that

My SO adds very little to our relationship. She has a dead end job. I cook. I work. I oversee finances. I plan trips. She doesn’t have a voice in the relationship. I’ve asked her to give her perspective but she always defaults to mine bc she thinks I’m smarter/worldly. She feels intimated by me and my social circle. Lately, I’ve found myself thinking for her. Anticipating her wants and needs and then adjusting my behavior to meet them. Which she appreciates but it’s frustrating 29M 27F

If you’re not buying MGNI, idk what to tell you ... $11->$18.6 in a week and MktCap is still 2.1Bn. P/S is 5, and it has room to grow for a MktCap of 5Bn based on competitors. Just putting that out there

Completed onsite interviews for the TAM role and recruiter gave me feedback that my technical depth wasn’t up to par for the role but my googleness/leadership and GCA interview feedback was stellar so they plan to propose me for Cloud PM roles instead. Does this happen? Or are they just being nice? What’s the probability that they’ll match me to another role?
