Had my annual review earlier today and I’m not happy with the raise and bonus offered. Aside from the managing partner, there were several other non-equity partners in the room and I didn’t feel comfortable negotiating in front of everyone. I’d rather speak to the managing partner alone as he’s the only one who has the ability to make decisions. I’ll have to wait until Monday to do it in-person but wondering if I should set up a call between now and Monday to discuss? Would Monday be too late?

Horrible anxiety about considering a new job....
I was one of the big firm stealth layoffs in covid and joined a boutique firm in Sept. They came sort of close to matching my salary but I moved to SoCal and have an opportunity to jump back in to big law and get $100k raise. The people at the small firm are so nice, but hours are nuts and if I’m going to work this much, I might as well get paid more, right? Is it too soon? How do you tell them when the managing partner took you under his wing?

I recently gave my small firm notice that I am leaving and moving to another state. I mentioned that I am considering starting my own practice in the new area, and the managing partner suggested that I transition to an “of counsel” position at a 1099 hourly rate (remote) while I got started. I thought the rate was a bit low, but I’m not sure what to compare it to. Anybody have any experience with these arrangements? Any advice on how to structure? Or if it’s worth it? Any input is appreciated.

I accepted an offer from another firm and gave notice to my direct partner on Friday. He asked me to wait a few days as a courtesy before giving notice to the firm’s managing partner. The partner I work for knows several of the attorneys at the firm where I got the offer. He is now coming back to me and saying my current firm will match the salary, offer better hours, better title, etc. Needless to say, I’m torn. How bad is it to walk back on an accepted offer? We are in a smaller legal market.

I was let go from my position yesterday. The managing partner, who did the letting go, said it as because of poor development and bad work product. Yet, only in December, I got a solid raise and excellent bonus for my size firm. Between then, the partner had made unsupported claims of bad work (e.g., claimed I used the wrong code in a letter bc it wasn’t the one he told me to use but the one the documents supported). How many associates don’t have access to their full billing software? All I can do is input my time and create a recap of hours report for different date ranges. No ability to check on amounts billed to clients or receipts so there is no way to track my realization rate or progress towards bonus. Is this something I should bring up with the managing partner?

What is expected when thanking the managing partner for a year end bonus? We are a two atty firm and I'm a first year associate if that makes any difference.

Anyone else in transactional law struggling with the perverse incentives of keeping your hours under the flat fee you’re billing for the deal but high enough to meet your target? My managing partner gave me extensive praise that all my deals are under budget, but my hours are just under my target for bonus (bonuses can also be given on a discretionary basis, but who wants to risk that?)

Wanted to get some thoughts. My wife works in private accounting and just got promoted to manager. We prepared for her compensation negotiation for about a week. She goes in and they low ball her with only a 4k raise. She counters with her value to the firm and the office managing partner literally laughs in her face. You guys think she should just bail? I am embarrassed that this is how they treat their employees.

I was offered X$ as a salary for a supervisor role. I asked for 10k more as a counter and received a greater breakdown of the correct pay being offered. With bonuses and shift diff it comes to maybe 5k more. That is only if the bonuses and overtime bonuses kick in. Do I still go with my original counter? This is very confusing for me.
