I was laid off a month ago from a small office, after being there for two years. I truly thought I left on good terms, and even got a severance package. Now a potential employer wants references, but no one from that old job is calling me back, and I'm stumped as to why. Should I list someone from there anyway, or just use references from previous jobs?

This happens all the time. Sometimes after layoffs, people just go quiet, either out of awkwardness, company policy, or they're just busy. If you're concerned, don’t include them. Better to use references you know will speak well about you and follow through.

It’s better to use references from previous jobs who you’ll know will give you a good reference and will actually respond to the potential employers’ calls. If the potential employer asks, it’s best to tell the truth and let them know that you haven’t heard back so you just wanted to be safe.

Hi,

I am graduating this December and looking for full time roles starting January 2023. I have 2 years of data science work experience before my Masters and I'm currently working part-time as a data science engineer - building data pipelines, dashboards; optimizing, packaging and deploying ML models.

I'm looking for referrals in data science space. I can share my github profile/resume/github page if you need more information. Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
