Every point of communication is an interview to me. Even if informally. Sometimes it’s just a good intro, and you should be asking questions during the “chat” too.

Nope, not in person but only over the phone. It’s usually a recruiter gauging if I want to explore an opportunity. I guess I always assume a chat is an interview if it’s in person. However, if it’s not, it’s kind of a waste of time to chat and then have an interview too

I’ve definitely had that happen. Sometimes those “quick chats” are absolutely a soft interview where they’re watching how you communicate and carry yourself. Even if it feels casual I usually treat those like the interview already started.

Yes, that’s happened to me. It starts off feeling casual, but then you realize every answer and reaction is being watched. It’s tricky because you never know if you should treat it like a normal chat or a full-on interview.
