Not just saying this to make you feel better but I totally get how scary it feels right now, but you’re not alone. And no, this isn’t 2008 all over again. Layoffs are tough, but they don’t define your career; in fact, many people come back stronger and find even better opportunities. You’ve got the skills and resilience to bounce back, and honestly, you’ll be just fine.
I got laid off last year, and I know how heavy it feels. I'm so sorry you're in the thick of it. Remember: It’s not a death sentence, even if it absolutely feels like one right now. The market’s tough, but you’re not alone, and you will land on your feet. It's just a matter of time!
I really don't think it's as bad as 2008. I distinctly remember 2008 like it was yesterday and this feels very different. I understand how you feel though, it is scary and I'm sorry about your layoff. Don't give up though, there are still plenty of jobs out there! `
I am sorry you are going through this; that's not easy for sure. Layoffs feel so personal, even when we know they’re not. I’ve been through it too, and what helped was giving myself grace and taking one small action at a time. You're not starting over, you’re starting from experience. Take a breath, grieve it, then get strategic. Reach out to 5 people this week. Update your pitch.
You've got this! I believe with the right strategy, you WILL land a job! 😊 I'd recommend researching and finding 10-20 companies that you admire. Make sure you know your connection story: why you feel passionate about working for each individual company. Find people on LinkedIn who work in your target department at each company, and send them a brief connection request. Include a short version of your connection story, tell them you have a quick question, and ask to connect. When they connect, you can share your full connection story and ask for advice on earning a job at the company (DON'T directly ask for a job 😊). While you're waiting for a reply, you can do some self-assessment to determine how you like to add value to companies.
This backchanneling process may seem slow, but you'd be surprised at how you can get noticed by hiring managers at your dream companies without even knowing anyone who works there.
Getting laid off is simply a learning experience that is helping you grow in your career (even if it doesn't seem to help in the moment). If nothing else, you're learning how to navigate this tough job market, and that is an extremely valuable skill to have, because every job is temporary. Know that you did nothing wrong to be laid off, and you will bounce back! 💪
